Volvo Construction Equipment unveils the Volvo CareTrack telematics system

Volvo Construction Equipment is the first OEM to announce the launch of a full fledged telematics system in the Indian construction equipment industry for enabling better ‘man-machine communication’. Unveiled by Mr. Mrityunjaya Singh, Managing Director, Volvo India Private Limited, the CareTrackTM telematics system will help in the remote monitoring of machines across locations as well as making available real time information. Volvo Construction Equipment in India will provide CareTrackTM equipped as standard on most of its construction machines.

Using GPRS/ GSM (mobile network) to send information, the new technology will enable users to track the location of their machines, fuel consumption, speed and hours of operation and the time for next service. The data on machines will be available securely and instantaneously to any remote online connection. Employing fault reporting, activity warnings and remote diagnosis, this technology will help Volvo dealers and machine owners to identify and resolve machine problems faster and proactively.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mrityunjaya Singh, Managing Director, Volvo India Private Limited said:

“Volvo’s investment in technological innovations has primarily been driven by customer needs. In recent times, the need for real time information is growing faster than ever before and it was imperative for us to invest in a telematics tool that would help our customers in better site management leading to cost savings and timely completion of projects. CareTrackTM will help in enhancing machine uptime through better control over equipment usage.”

Oxfam India calls for closing the gap between the two Indias

Deeply concerned over the widening divide between the two Indias - the developed and the underdeveloped - and the lack of an inclusive development path that India is currently on, Oxfam India has given the call for closing the gap between four groups of people -- women and men; Dalits and non Dalits; tribals and non-tribals; and Muslims and non-Muslims.

``Among all poverty indicators, it is the dalits, tribals and Muslims who are found to be worse off than the others. While there has been a growing assertion among the dalits led by its middle class intellectuals and politicians, a similar pattern is yet to emerge among the tribals and the Muslims,’’ says Nisha Agrawal, Chief Executive Officer, Oxfam India, adding : ``And despite positive changes in the policy environment and progressive legislation, Indian women continue to face discrimination on all fronts, including inside and outside their homes.

While India has already become the third largest economy (in terms of purchasing power parity) after USA and China and as per the World Bank and has seen consistent growth rates between 6-9% for the last five years, second only to China, even today, according to World Bank parameters of 1.25 $ a day, 456 million people or approximately 42% of the people in India are poor. It is also worth noting that every third poor in the world is an Indian; every third illiterate in the world is an Indian too and approximately half of its children are malnourished. India also ranks deplorably high in maternal deaths ( in many states higher than sub-Saharan Africa ).

Oxfam India is now seeking to focus its programs in a few key thematic and geographic areas so as to maximize impact. It will focus its work in seven states that have above average poverty rates and have lagged in the post-liberalization period and would require strategic intervention: Assam , Bihar , Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Besides the focus states, Oxfam India will also be working on urban poverty issues in key cities across the country.

``Since roughly two-thirds of poverty is concentrated in these states, Oxfam India will focus two thirds of its resources here and use one third of its resources to respond to specific issues in the rest of India . In view of the increasing number of urban pockets of acute poverty, it will also include an urban component in its programs and address urban-specific issues.’’ Nisha informed.

In Bengaluru, Oxfam India has already identified certain projects and programs aimed at reducing the gap between the urban rich and the poor. ``Even in a wealthy city like Bengaluru, we can see the two India ’s existing side by side and we need to engage with both’’ informs Nisha.

Oxfam India will also be focussing its efforts on building the capacity of its staff, partners and communities to understand as well as address discrimination by making people aware of their own perceptions, prejudices and facilitating an understanding of others. It would work towards building partners capacity to address communal conflict and foster peace.

The other key areas of work for the future would be to influence the role of private sector in poverty reduction and also explore key aspects of India ’s growing role at the South Asia regional as well as international level from the perspective of influencing policies and programs for a poverty free region and world. It will also seek to build an active and international platform of civil society groups across northern and southern countries.

``Oxfam India is seeking to gradually transform itself from essentially being a grant administering and monitoring agency to an active member of Indian civil society and a rights based advocacy organization. Our advocacy will be based on the grassroots work we support. To understand better what is working well and what is not, we are committed to set some of the key processes in place, and work towards setting up community based monitoring systems to track and use the outcomes to enhance program quality and ensure rights based approach in programmatic interventions,’’ says Nisha

The new Oxfam India partnership policy envisages both funding and non-funding partnerships with a wide range of development actors—grassroots NGOs, academic institutions, research think tanks, national and global advocacy NGOs, etc. The proposed patterns of funding relationship include maintaining the diversity of partner size (micro, small, medium and large) but establishing limits for each category; establishing longer term relationships with partners and to fund each partner for a maximum 10-12 year cycle (through two strategy periods); and wherever feasible, provide core funding rather than project-by-project funding to partners.

At the moment, Oxfam India is upscaling its fundraising operations across various cities, to expand its supporter base and to build active citizenship by engaging the rich and middle class in India in addressing the many development challenges facing our country. ``Our experiments with running in-house fund-raising operations in Bangalore and New Delhi have paid off. We are happy that the citizens of Bengaluru contributed generously to the Kosi floods in Bihar and recently to the South India floods. We also have fund-raising offices now in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chandigarh besides multiple operations in metro cities including Bengaluru,’’ says Nisha.

Oxfam India would also be organizing a unique fund-raising event called Trailwalker in February next year. Trailwalker is an event that involves walking 100 kms in teams of four for the purpose of raising funds to fight poverty and injustice. It is a signature Oxfam event and very popular in many countries around the world. ``It is a great opportunity for the rich and the middle class Indians, such as those working in the IT and corporate sector in Bengaluru to contribute to India ’s development while participating in a fun activity like this,’’ informs Nisha.

The trail identified is from Mysore to Bengaluru and corporates would be participating in a big way. ``There are teams which have completed the entire trial in 12 hours and there are others who take 30-48 hours. It is an event that tests our wits and challenges us to look at poverty and injustice,’’ Nisha adds.

Patni enhances HIPAA 5010, ICD-10 offerings

Patni Computer Systems Ltd. (Patni) (BSE: 532517, NSE: PATNI, NYSE: PTI), a leading global IT services and BPO provider, today introduced enhanced versions of its HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 assessment and migration service offerings. Leveraging the company’s extensive experience in the healthcare domain and its strategic alliance with Milliman consulting, Patni created an assessment framework designed to help healthcare organizations successfully convert from the HIPAA 4010 electronic transaction set to the 5010 set and from ICD-9 code sets to ICD-10.

While conversion complexity differs by organization depending upon the number, type and flexibility of affected processes and systems, the Patni approach provides a proven roadmap to meet critical deadlines, while enabling payers to seize opportunities for organizational improvement and operational efficiency. With the compliance challenge exacerbated by slow economic recovery, mounting pressures of healthcare reform and conflicting business priorities, healthcare payers will be motivated to seek outside assistance from service providers such as Patni and Milliman.

“Facing regulatory deadlines in 2012 and 2013, and with ICD-10 compliance impacting nearly every core process, system and interface, healthcare organizations must begin their remediation efforts sooner rather than later,” said Ganesh Iyer, Senior Vice-President and Global Head, BFSI, at Patni.

“Payers face substantial remediation and migration costs – from $2 million for Tier 3 companies up to $5 million for Tier 1 organizations,” Iyer continued. “They’ll need to update existing systems and provide employee education and communications until all coding issues have been resolved. They will generate cost benefits from improved disease management and improvements in claims adjudication and payment processes, but it will require significant changes in their IT infrastructures and methods of data retention, reporting and analysis.”

Working together, Patni and Milliman will utilize their tested processes, methodologies and tools to assist with HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 conversion from the initial assessment phase through remediation, implementation and training phases to ensure a smooth transition. They can also assist organizations in defining business intelligence and analytical requirements and capabilities to leverage the granular data received as a result of ICD- 10 coding.

Patni’s phased approach in the HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 data conversion deployments includes expert handling of assessment, pre-planning, design and mapping, technical and business impact analysis, integration and testing, and documentation and knowledge transfer processes.

Global Logistics companies expand innovation in Singapore

Logistics Company DHL has joined hands with The Logistics Institute (TLI) - Asia Pacific of the National University of Singapore (NUS) to launch the $3 million Sustainable Supply Chain Centre of Asia Pacific (SSCCAP), an initiative aimed at boosting sustainable supply chain development in the region.

Global logistics and Supply Chain Management (SCM) companies had expanded their innovative and specialized activities in Singapore in 2009. Investment commitments in Singapore’s logistics sector in 2009 amounted to S$481 million in total business spending. The SSCCAP will have seven full-time employees and be helmed by a tripartite committee, made up of representatives from DHL, NUS, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and industry partners from Accenture and Dell.

Opening in July 2010, the SSCCAP will be hosted at TLI – Asia Pacific at the National University of Singapore.

With the collaboration, SSCCAP aims to become a premier centre for joint applied research as well as for outreach and education. TLI – Asia Pacific already offers a best-in-class Logistics Double Masters and Masters in Supply Chain Management program. It also aims to become a hub of sustainable supply chain best practice within Asia Pacific.

Paul Graham, CEO of DHL supply chain (Asia Pacific), also urged other industry players to help out as well in terms of both intellectual and financial support. DHL aims to reduce its carbon footprint across its business by 10 per cent by 2012 and 30 per cent by 2020.

“There are a number of things we do in terms of how we design our routes and express business, to ensure they travel a shorter distance but still deliver the service, re-kitting our aircraft fleet to more efficient engines to ensure we’re reducing the carbon footprint, the packaging we use,” said Mr. Paul Graham.

“As global logistics and SCM companies seek to capitalize on Asia’s growth, Singapore’s world-class logistics capabilities and sophisticated lead market presents a strategic site for them to identify and respond to rising opportunities in Asia. We are delighted that many global and local companies are developing and implementing innovative and thought-leading SCM solutions from Singapore,” said Mr Julian Ho, Assistant Managing Director, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) said it will look at increasing awareness on best practices among logistics players. “This centre is about bringing together that group of ideas, that knowledge and putting up a more systematic and structured way to help companies think about sustainability,” said Mr Kelvin Wong, director, Logistics and Urban Solutions at EDB.

McAfee Comment on Patch Tuesday & XP SP2 End of Support

Microsoft on Tuesday released four Security Bulletins to address five security vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an attacker to take full control over a vulnerable Windows computer.

Among the fixes is a patch for a critical vulnerability in the Windows Help and Support Center , a feature designed to provide assistance to users. This vulnerability was irresponsible disclosed to the public by Google employee Tavis Ormandy prior to Microsoft providing a fix. Cybercriminals have already taken advantage of the vulnerability and exploited it to attack Windows users. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-042.mspx)

"McAfee Labs has seen malware in the wild that exploits this o-day vulnerability," said Dave Marcus, research and communications director for McAfee Labs. "Security researchers need to work closely with software vendors to ensure vulnerabilities are patched in the most expedient method and timeline possible, without putting users at risk."

In addition to the patches, Microsoft today officially ended support for Windows XP Service Pack 2. This means that computers running Windows XP with SP2 will no longer get security updates from Microsoft.

"Many enterprises and consumer users still deploy and depend heavily on applications that run on this Windows build. It is unclear how much risk and expense the end of support will cause users worldwide but we expect cybercriminals to capitalize on this opportunity," said Marcus. "Users of Windows XP SP2 should consider migration options and robust security solutions to mitigate risk."

McAfee recommends that users install Microsoft's patches as soon as possible. Home users should use Windows Automatic Updates. Business users need to have a risk management strategy in place to prioritize the patches.

McAfee provides enterprises with endpoint and network based security technology as well as risk and compliance tools to shield against cyber attacks and allow organizations to patch on their own time

HP Simplifies Networking to Increase Performance, Reduce Costs in a Converged Infrastructure

HP today announced new high-performance network solutions that expand the portfolio to enable the company’s Converged Infrastructure strategy by delivering simplified server connectivity.

The new offerings, which include a new Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) module for the high-performance HP A5820 data center switch (H3C S5820x), are designed to improve application availability, increase deployment flexibility and lower the overall total cost of ownership (TCO) of the network infrastructure. These additions bring enhanced server edge technology to HP’s FlexFabric high performance, flexible and secure data center networking fabric for a Converged Infrastructure.

“Traditional data center networks are rigid, complex and expensive. As such, they are unable to keep pace with the increasing use of server virtualization and rapid changes in business demands”, said Subhodeep Bhattacharya, Country Manager, HP Networking, Hp India. “HP FCoE is an emerging technology that reduces network complexity, as well as costs, while complementing traditional Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage connectivity solutions”, he added

The FCoE module for the HP A5820 data center switch efficiently connects virtual and physical servers to Ethernet and storage networks. The new solution will significantly simplify connectivity and reduce costs where the bulk of the complexity exists - at the server edge. This approach to FCoE helps clients avoid a complete network overhaul by choosing an incremental migration path to deploy FCoE end to end. This enables clients to set the stage for future network convergence deployments while leveraging existing Fibre Channel investments.

Enabling converged networks

HP’s new, industry standards based FCoE module for the HP A5820 data center switch converges storage and network top-of-rack switches as well as dedicated server and storage network adapters. This enables clients to reduce required equipment and cabling by up to 75 percent.(1) Other client benefits include:

— Up to 10 times performance improvement over existing Gigabit (Gb) connectivity technology with dual speed 1/10 Gb ports and wire-speed 10 Gb per second throughput.

— Reduced energy costs with an optimized airflow design that separates the “hot” aisles from the “cold” aisles in the data center to increase efficiency in the cooling system.

— Simplified deployment with an HP networking A-series common operating system and Intelligent Management Center (IMC) for single-pane-of-glass management across the entire network.

The new HP A5820 FCoE solution complements the recently introduced HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric module for BladeSystem, which reduces complexity at the server edge by automating and virtualizing server connectivity to data and storage networks. The HP Virtual Connect module enables clients to reduce up to 95 percent of network equipment by eliminating the need for multiple interconnects. (2) It also lowers power and cooling costs up to 40 percent per year(2) while dramatically simplifying change management.

Accenture, Dr. Reddy’s Foundation and NASSCOM Foundation Team to Train Underprivileged Youth in BPO Skills

Accenture (NYSE: ACN), Dr. Reddy’s Foundation (DRF) and the NASSCOM Foundation (NF) are working together to provide comprehensive training and career opportunities in business process outsourcing (BPO) for underprivileged youth in India.

The effort is part of Accenture’s corporate citizenship focus – Skills to Succeed – which educates people, building skills that enable them to participate in and contribute to the economy. As a first step, Accenture employees are updating DRF’s BPO curriculum, which will be distributed through DRF’s Livelihood Advancement Business Schools program, free of cost to NASSCOM’s Knowledge Network members and partner NGOs.

Additionally, Accenture and DRF will identify, recruit and train facilitators identified by NASSCOM. Accenture will also select potential BPO academy sites, based on job availability in those markets. Upon completion of the course, Accenture will recruit from among the graduates for its own BPO operations, and DRF will conduct follow-up workshops with NGOs.

“Bringing BPO training to disadvantaged youth is part of Accenture’s commitment to building skills that will help them sustain their families and their communities,” said Harsh Maglik, chairman and geography managing director, Accenture in India. “This effort, which draws on our people’s passion, experience and commitment to developing and nurturing talent, is aimed at making a significant, lasting impact on the economic well-being of individuals who might otherwise become marginalized.”

“This initiative provides the tools for rural youth to be trained in BPO skills suitably in order to be gainfully employed,” said Jitendra Kalra, Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, “We believe that we will make a significant improvement to the lives of the disadvantaged youth, by sharing our training expertise in the Livelihood Advancement Business School processes. DRF will provide voluntary technical support, in terms of training, sharing of best practices and documentation of key learnings, which will boost this initiative.”

“With about 74 percent of Indians residing in villages, domestic BPOs can bring a revolution in employment opportunities for the rural educated masses,” said Jaithirth (Jerry) Rao, Chairman, NASSCOM Foundation. “With the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the BPO space, these initiatives provide a huge opportunity in securing sustainable livelihood for the rural youth. This needs to be capitalized and companies should collaborate to create more job opportunities for sustained equitable development in the country. Such collaborations are required in the industry to address the significant employability gap in our country and we want to encourage other BPO organizations to extend similar support. Only when we have large scale participation will programs such as these have the maximum impact and bridge the urban-rural divide.”

HP StoreOnce, the Next Generation in Data Deduplication Software

HP today announced HP StoreOnce, a new generation of data deduplication software that can be deployed at multiple points in a converged infrastructure, reducing the number of times data has to be deduplicated and enabling customers to more efficiently manage and control data growth.

Traditional data deduplication is inefficient as it requires multiple products and processes depending on application, workload, network protocol and data type. Often, data is duplicated and deduplicated multiple times during its life cycle.

HP is the first company to eliminate this complexity with a single, unified architecture for deduplication called HP StoreOnce. Built on patented innovation and features designed by HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, this new architecture maximizes deduplication performance, while minimizing hardware requirements.

HP StoreOnce allows the same software to be used on backup customers, virtual appliances, inline appliances and scale-out storage systems, which means that customers need only one solution for all their deduplication needs. HP StoreOnce provides a significantly more efficient method for managing and protecting data while maximizing utilization of storage capacity than competing data deduplication offerings.(1)

By eliminating the complexity of multiple deduplication processes and products, HP StoreOnce provides improved productivity and data management efficiency. It also is higher performing than competitive offerings, showing up to 20 percent improvement in performance for inline data deduplication.(1) As a result, customers can spend up to 95 percent less on storage capacity, which can be reinvested in new IT projects to drive organization innovation.(2)

Customer benefits of HP StoreOnce software include:

— Twice the price/performance over competitive offerings.(1) This is accomplished through “smart data and index layout,” an innovation from HP Labs that reduces disk fragmentation and increases input/output (I/O) efficiency.

— Simplified management and automation of data protection processes with the ability to manage multiple locations and easily replicate data from remote offices to data centers.

— Greater efficiency due to innovations such as “sparse indexing,” an HP Labs innovation that reduces memory and disk I/O requirements for all types of workloads.

— Investment protection with HP StoreOnce providing high-performance deduplication on backup appliances today and integrated into virtual appliances, tape backup and scale-out systems for the future.

Store once and be done

HP StoreOnce software is new in all HP StorageWorks D2D backup systems. These systems span the HP StorageWorks D2D2500, ideal for small business and enterprise remote offices, through the new HP StorageWorks D2D4312, designed for midsize data centers.

The new D2D4312 delivers high-performance disk-based backup and restore capabilities and scales up to 48 terabytes. This enables customers to consolidate backup of multiple servers in a single process. Optional multisite replication functionality automates backups to a centralized location in the data center. As a result, customers with multisite deployments can save nearly $2 million compared to using pure tape backup and offsite archival solutions.(3)

Additionally, HP D2D solutions combined with HP Data Protector backup and recovery software can deliver up to 70 percent savings in licensing and support compared to other solutions.

Customer benefits of the D2D backup systems include:

— Improved deduplication performance by minimizing disk fragmentation. This also provides consistent backup and recovery speeds.
