Ltd, while addressing the media at the press conference held on 9th September, 2010 in Mumbai stressed on the issue of corrosion and the losses incurred across industrial verticals. The cumulative loss of corrosion in India amounts to almost three percent of GDP.
The loss incurred due to corrosion has shown an exponential increase in last 5 years. In 2010, the figure has increased at an alarming rate of 37% (Rs. 2 lac crore) as against (Rs. 1.25 lac crore in 2007) and (Rs. 36000 crore in 2005) respectively.
“The biggest losses are incurred in the infrastructure sector which has intensive use of iron and steel. Several infrastructural projects are being constructed like Sky Walks, Mumbai Metro, Mono Rails, Flyovers wherein iron & steel are most widely utilized. Iron & Steel are infrastructure materials that get badly affected by corrosion because of which the structure gets damaged in less than 5 years.
These precious natural and limited resources are being harmed and destroyed due to irreversible nature of corrosion” Kapil Dev said. While giving a live demonstration of the new technology that could help stop corrosion, Kapil highlighted the factors responsible for corrosion and the simple technique’s which could be applied to prevent them. According to Kapil Dev, these critical issues need immediate government initiative, support and pave way for modern technology which could reverse this process. Key Issues such as restricted conventional specs in the drafts of government tender notices, maintenance issues, addressing the problem at its inception stage need immediate attention. Only then, we can take necessary measures to prevent and arrest the alarming growth rate of corrosion in India.
