Information Technology industry body, the National Association of Software and Services Companies, NASSCOM today announced the appointment of Dr. Anupam Khanna, as Chief Economist and Director–General, Policy Outreach. Dr. Khanna will lead overall design and implementation of policy development and engagement strategies for NASSCOM and our industry at large.
Happy over the appointment of Dr. Khanna at NASSCOM, Mr. Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM, said “As part of the future directions work for NASSCOM undertaken by the Executive Council, it was recommended that NASSCOM will need to enhance its role around thought leadership and deepen our capabilities for strategic analysis and policy formulation. NASSCOM will benefit a great deal from Dr. Khanna’s rich professional experience, spanning across continents and sectors including technology, industry, energy, telecommunications, urban development especially in major emerging markets. He has led several studies in India on technological innovation in manufacturing that contributed to significant policy reforms. Dr. Khanna has had a long and distinguished career in economic policy. He spent thirty years with the World Bank in Washington DC, the last five as Senior Manager (Director), Policy Support. Between 2000-2003, he was Chief Economist for the Royal Dutch/Shell Group based in London, United Kingdom. He also lived in Beijing to set up the World Bank’s Resident Mission in China. Earlier he was the Senior Advisor to the Mr. Joseph Stiglitz, Chief Economist, World Bank, and also served as the Special Assistant to the President during 1989-91.
Dr. Khanna was also the Principal Adviser to the high-level National Transport Development Policy Committee charged by the Prime Minister to develop a long-term strategy covering for transport in India through 2030. Since returning to India in 2009 he has also been Senior Advisor to the President of the Global Development Network and serves on advisory groups for policy research in India and the UK.
Dr. Khanna is a graduate with distinction from IIT Kanpur (1974 batch) and was recently conferred him with a Distinguished Alumnus. He holds a Ph.D. and two M.S. degrees in from Stanford University in California. He has also been a visiting fellow at Oxford University researching global governance and international business regulation.
