Prestigious recognition for GE invention that can significantly reduce life-threatening electrical hazards

A unique product conceptualized and designed by scientists at GE Global Research is earning high praise from industry leaders for its ability to shield industrial - workers from explosive and deadly arcing current. Recently, Plant Engineering magazine named GE’s Arc Vault its ‘Product of the Year.” Conceptualized at the company’s India Technology Center by Asokan T, a Chief Scientist at the Center, the Arc Vault represents a breakthrough in the area of electrical safety.  It can stop and contain a lethal arcing fault in less than - eight milliseconds – as much as 10 times faster than conventional methods -- resulting in lives saved and equipment being spared significant damage. With the activation switch enabled, the trip unit will look for a current spike, and if necessary, trigger the containment dome and call for the main breaker to trip – stopping the deadly current before it can result in widespread explosion or fire. Toshiyuki Kasai is the new President of Epson India

Epson, a world leader in digital imaging and printing solutions today announced the appointment of Mr. Toshiyuki Kasai to the newly created position of President at Epson India. Toshiyuki will be based out of Epson India’s Bangalore headquarters. Toshiyuki is an Industrial Engineer from Waseda University and brings with him extensive experience spanning 30 years spent in various capacities within the Seiko Epson group.
Epson India has been growing rapidly for the last few years and expects to close this year with a turnover of approx Rs. 590 crores. As per latest IDC data for the Inkjet Printer market (Q4 2011), Epson now commands a Value market share of 36.6%, placing it very close to the market leader. In Dot Matrix printers Epson has a commanding 54% market share and in Point of Sale printers 52% market share. In projectors Epson is in a close fought battle for the top position.
With India being a priority market, Epson India will no longer be reporting to the regional hub at Epson Singapore but will now be reporting directly to Seiko Epson Japan. This along with Toshiyuki’s appointment is indicative of the increased expectation from Epson India in the years to come.
Toshiyuki has a vast body of experience and has worked in various functions including production control, purchase, information systems, corporate planning, business planning, profit management and various project activities. This is Toshiyuki’s third posting out of Japan. He has spent 7 years at Epson Portland (USA) in the late 80’s/early 90’s and subsequently was the Senior Vice President of Business Infrastructure at Epson Europe from 2004 to 2007. Prior to joining Epson India, Toshiyuki was the Head of Business Management for the Imaging & Information Division at Seiko Epson Japan.

VIJAYA BANK CONDUCTS ‘EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING(EGM)’ OF SHAREHOLDERS ON 26.3.2012

Extraordinary General Meeting(EGM) of the shareholders of Vijaya Bank was held at the Head Office in Bangalore. The meeting was presided over by Shri.HS Upendra Kamath, Chairman &Managing Director, Vijaya Bank in the presence of Smt.Shubhalakshmi Panse, Executive Director, Vijaya Bank and the Directors on the Board of the Bank.


The Meeting passed a special resolution in order to enable the Bank to make preferential allotment of equity shares to ‘Life Insurance Corporation of India’.

The Capital raised through the preferential route will be utilized to shore up the Capital adequacy of the Bank and to finance general business needs.

The meeting was attended by large number of shareholders of the Bank.

Tata AIG Life’s latest campaign builds on values that create a strong foundation for a secure future

The TV commercial, conceived by Bates India, has successfully showcased the importance of right values which commences with a daughter convincing her father to meet her boyfriend. The father was reluctant and hesitant and was of the opinion that a new generation boy would not have appropriate values. Surprised by the young boy’s values rooted in tradition, when he touches his feet, he opens up and offers support for a coffee date. The commercial ends by emphasizing the fact that “Good beginnings deliver good returns all your life.”

Nutrition should be made a part of medical treatment

 India’s biggest Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods, Dietary Supplements and Ingredients Show - Nutra India Summit 2012 on Day 1 featured a CEO summit and the topic for the panel discussion was “Increasing India’s share of global Neutraceuticals and Nutritional Market.” The panel was chaired by Dr. V. Prakash, FRSC - Distinguished Scientist of CSIR-INDIA; President - Nutrition Society of India; Chairman, Nutra India Summit and the other speakers were Dr. Manfred Eggersdorfer - Senior Vice President, DSM Nutritional Products & Head for Nutritional Science Advocacy, Switzerland, Mr. Sanjaya J. Mariwala - Promoter Director, OmniActive Health Technologies Ltd., Managing Director, Kancor Ingredients Ltd., Dr. Vilas P. Sinkar - Vice President, Research & Development & Head of Unilever R&D, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Mr. Rehan Khan - Country Head & General Manager - India, Abbott Nutrition International, Mr. V.S. Reddy - Managing Director, British Biologicals, Mr. Kumar C. Vasist - Group Manager, Product Development, Abbott Nutrition R&D, Abbott Laboratories, and Dr. Lekh R. Juneja - Representative Director & Executive Vice President, Taiyo Kagaku Co., Ltd., Japan.

Dr. V Prakash chaired the panel and presented the welcome note. The session was opened for discussion with a quote by Dr. Prakash “If pharmaceuticals define efficiency, then Neutraceuticals defines efficacy.” The panel members presented their views on some of the important factors affecting the success of Neutraceuticals in India, which included- Linking farmers, growers to micro, macro and global industries in the market is very crucial in India. Food security and fortification should be the nutritional agenda. Role of nutrition, Neutraceuticals and neutrigenomics should be well understood. New innovations should be encouraged. Customer Delight should be kept in mind. Power of biotechnology and neutrigenomics should be well exploited.
Before inviting the speakers to give their views, he stated that food safety is a crucial issue in Neutraceuticals and India is almost step 8 in FSSAI in the coder language. Laying emphasis on Neutraceuticals he said, “culture, science, Neutraceuticals and nutritionals and humans coexist and have role in improving quality of life of people by global networking of food science and technology with benefit to growers and processors and mega industries in tune with SME’s with a firm but ground to reality regulatory consensus and ethics for a healthy society from pediatrics to geriatrics.”
Dr. Manfred Eggersdorfer, Shared his ideas to overcome the problems of malnutrition and deficiency of micro-nutrients among the people. He suggested that a panel of industry leaders with full expertise in this field should be created and Government should install some programs to generate awareness among the masses and to promote more and more R&D. We have to use naturally available ingredients for the generation of useful and healthy products. Safety assessments and efficacy assessments are a big concern and have to be dealt with.
Mr. Sanjaya J. Mariwala, said the success of neutraceutics will depend on what we dream and how we act to achieve the same. He insisted that the Govt. should frame an agenda to promote the growth of neutraceutics. Talking about R&D he said their work in this field should be encouraged and public and private partnership should be focused more.
He suggested that the industries should focus on the products that are costumer and need focused, more and more educational awareness should be created regarding the action and the mechanism of working of functional foods.
Dr. Vilas P. Sinkar emphasizes the use of right regulations to promote Neutraceuticals. He listed out the features of Indian Neutraceuticals market and said although being a small market (Rupees 4500 crores) which is less than 1% of the world market, it is growing at a rate of 18% which is double than the rate of the rest of the world which is approx.7%.
He further highlighted accessibility, affordability and awareness as the only solutions to the problems faced by Neutraceuticals. Throwing a light on the statistical analysis and the improvement in the field, he said the percentage of physicians in India referring nutritional supplements has gone up to 26% per year since last 4 years, which is a breakthrough. Due to such achievements the Neutraceuticals market in India will be about 100 to 200 billion US Dollar in 2050.
Mr. V.S. Reddy, said their company being the first one to export the Neutraceuticals from India is trying their level best to make Neutraceuticals a success at the highest level. He insisted on the Introduction of nutrition as a part of the medical treatment and generation of more food and technology should be highly encouraged. He enlisted that following all these actions, Neutraceuticals can achieve a growth percentage of 40-50% every year.
Mr. Kumar C. Vasist said that developing credibility for nutrition and education should be at the forefront; the use of traditional medicine should be enhanced. The issues like quality and consistency of the products were his major areas of concern. Listing out the flaws in the infrastructure and the places of manufacture, he pointed out that they need of developing them. Import and export of raw materials and products is a big issue and should be sorted out.
Dr. Lekh R. Juneja said the emphasis should be laid on the ways that can take India on global map and which can pave a pathway for overcoming the micronutrient deficiency. He put forth taste and perception as the major issues to be kept in mind while working with nutritionals and functional foods. He forbid Indian people from following “me too” strategy i.e., rather than copying old products we should focus on the production of new and unique ones. He concluded with the message that We have to make good use of science and technology for designing unique products.

Acer tops the charts in the desktop category

Registering strong growth for the fourth consecutive quarter, personal computer maker Acer India, became the No 1 in the desktop segment with a market share of 12.2% per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011, as per the research firm IDC’s report. Acer achieved the top slot in the desktop category with a strong Q-on-Q growth of 5.2% and witnessed an industry leading Y-o-Y growth of 19.4% that accelerated the performance of the company.

In spite of tough macro-economic challenges faced by the PC market in 2011, including the dollar fluctuation and Hard disk drive shortage, Acer beat all odds to maintain its position in the Desktop category, thanks to its agility in overcoming myriad challenges in the supply chain.

Commenting on the company’s success Mr. S. Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer, Acer India said, “Our unique business model that ensured fresh technology being contemporized ahead of others, along with efficient and seamless logistics support proved to be extremely critical for us in meeting customers’ requirements across various industry verticals. We also had various channel partner initiatives that helped motivate our partners during difficult business environment.”



Along with sizeable wins from the government, large private corporates, K12 and the education segment, Acer’s commercial side of the business including normal run-rate saw significant traction that helped it maintain its stronghold in the Desktop category.

CIOs Bat for Charity at SAP F15 Invitational Cricket Cup


SAP India recently conducted NCR Edition of the annual SAP Invitational F15 Invitational Cricket Cup 2012, a tournament played as a means to bring together the SAP India ecosystem of customers for friendly competition on the cricket fields. Kicked off on 18th Feb, 2012, the tournament witnessed a stiff competition between 12 teams representing most illustrious companies vied for the top title in region.

 As a part of the event, SAP India along with the customers announced a grant of Rs. 120 thousand to Mobile Creches, an NGO working towards restoring the rights of the young child by providing the working mother with child care support through an integrated programme. Bangalore and Kochi Engineers win Lenovo's DO Network challenge to take away the prize of USD 25,000

The results are out! ‘India Engineered’, a project led by Krishna Raj SR, and his team Jyothi Jennifer Kurian, Manu Mukundan and Abulize MV, have been voted the winner of the first phase of Lenovo’s Do Network. The winners battled it out against 9 participating teams to emerge as India’s most promising technology inventors for their project on empowering Engineering students through online tutorials and sponsorships. The team will receive the grand prize of USD 25,000 from Lenovo.

Stage set in Bangalore for India's largest Golf Tournament


The Karnataka Golf Association is all set to witness the biggest domestic golf event - the Louis Philippe Cup - slated to begin on the 6th of March. The curtain-raiser to the Louis Philippe Cup, will be the TaylorMade Bulls Eye (golf darts) contest which will see the participation of all the top pros. Hewlett-Packard announced Maersk Line, the largest global shipping company, has signed a $150 million-plus infrastructure services agreement in October 2011 that will support the shipper’s global growth strategy. Under the five-year agreement, HP will help Maersk Line become an Instant-On Enterprise by using HP’s cloud-enabled data centers and HP Workplace Services to optimize its technology infrastructure.

“As a global leader in its industry, Maersk Line is driving significant change in its markets and needs a reliable technology foundation to support these efforts,” said Mike Nefkens, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Services – Europe, Middle East and Africa, HP. “To help achieve the company’s global strategy, HP will apply its cloud computing expertise and experience in managing complex technology environments enabling internal IT leaders to expand support.”

In addition, HP will take over the Service Desk function at Maersk Line and deliver Workplace Services to maintain the company’s computing devices, such as desktop and notebook PCs, for almost 38,000 users in more than 100 countries. As part of the agreement, HP will offer employment to all Maersk Line staff within these areas.

HP will provide Infrastructure support and monitoring for Maersk Line using its flexible and scalable delivery model from global locations like India, China and the Philippines using standardized processes for cost-effective support.

HP’s ITO India Center, which will deliver most of the services to Maersk under this agreement, will provide a range of ITO services spanning workplace services including Service Desk, data center services and enterprise security services.

HP is working with Maersk Line on its Instant-On Enterprise journey, helping the company provide improved service to its customers. The Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.
