The three day long International Conference on Technology Management -2012, hosted by the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon by the honorable Minister of Water Resources, Government of Karnataka, Shri Basavaraj Bommai on behalf of the Chief Minister Shri Jagadish Shettar. Some of the esteemed dignitaries present at the event were: Dr. Prahlada, Vice Chancellor, Defense Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, who delivered the keynote address on the need for harmonius conflict and creative discipline to foster innovation; and Mr. Richard Smyth, Former Vice President & Systems General, Airbus, and Aerospace consultant, France, the Guest of Honour who elaborated on how successful technology management ensures that investments are properly placed and objectives are properly met.
In his inaugural address, the chief guest, Shri Bommai, delivered the speech from the honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Jagdish Shettar’s office. He mentioned that Bangalore is on top of the international innovation list and ensures the most investor friendly environment in India. He highlighted the importance of IISc in setting a benchmark for science and technology in the country. He explained how the power structures and decision making are shifting from the political hubs towards the technology and knowledge hubs.
On a personal note, Shri Bommai said that knowledge is the new capital of 21st century. It is the time to reinvent the innovation wheel to solve everyday problems and enrich the quality of life for underprivileged, underserved citizens. He further added that there have been deliberations at the PMO on IISc being labeled ‘the science and technology landmark of Bangalore’ globally.
Prof. N. Balakrishnan, Associate Director, IISc Bengaluru, delivered the presidential address. In his address, he discussed the need to re-orient the research focus to align with the needs of society. He raised pertinent questions to the delegates to deliberate upon. Some of the issues he identified were the role of academic institutions in a changing paradigm for innovation, the training process for ensuring innovation, how does one credit innovation and what really constitutes an innovation?
Prof. B.N. Raghunandan, Chairman, Division of Earth and Environmental Sciences, IISc, Bengaluru, released the Conference Proceedings published by Springer Publications.
The ceremony was preceded by the inauguration of the ‘Innovation Confluence and Exhibition’. This exhibition features peer reviewed innovative technologies from IISc, Dell and Infosys that have been chosen for their potential commercial application and economic viability. Inventors and scientists conversed with attendee venture capitalists to explore the possibilities of funding, incubation and commercialization.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by ‘Showcasing Karnataka’. The discussion forum comprised of the eminent personalities of Mr. K. Jairaj, IAS, Retd. Former Additional Chief Secretary; Mr. M.N. Vidya Shankar, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government, Departments of Science and Technology and e-Governance; Prof. M.K. Sridhar, Executive Director and Member-Secretary for Karnataka Jnana Aayoga (Karnataka Knowledge Commission), Government of Karnataka; and Prof. S.Umapathy, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, IISc. The dignitaries illustrated the contribution of Karnataka in promoting scientific and technological leadership in the country.
The next two days of the conference will include a ‘Researchers Conclave’, where about a 100 researchers from across 22 countries will present the latest research in Technology Management and its allied areas. The other highlights of the conference are the ‘CEOs Conclave’ where CEOs will deliberate on the mega technology trends, an ‘Innovation Valuation Conclave’ featuring innovators, bankers and venture capitalists discussing issues related to valuation of intellectual capital and two special plenary sessions on the necessity of innovation and emerging trends in technology management. Apart from this, there will also be a Korean Technology Conclave, which will provide insights into the Korean experience on technologies for sustainable development.
