STMicroelectronics Unveils Industry-First Car-Door Controller IC

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and the leading supplier of car-door electronics, today introduced the market’s first multi-functional door-zone driver with an integrated electric-window control. This innovative chip, which reduces bill-of-material costs and offers new levels of passenger comfort, has already been selected for broad adoption at a leading German car manufacturer.

Today, equipment manufacturers use relays to drive the electric-window motors. ST’s newest door actuator driver redefines the established system topology, removing the need for mechanical relays in car-window control. The innovation slashes component costs and eliminates expensive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) countermeasures, associated with the existing solutions, while enabling users to enjoy a smoother and quieter car-window operation. ST’s new door-zone driver supports adjustable window speeds related to the position of the window - soft start and shutdown - and reduces noise levels with the removal of the relay as well.

ST’s L99DZ80 embeds an SPI-programmable slew-rate[1] control IP that can drive 4 external MOSFETs in a half-bridge configuration dedicated to PWM (Pulse Width Mode)-driven electric-window applications. Other features include six bridges for double door-lock control, mirror fold, and mirror-axis control, together with a high-side driver for mirror defroster, bulbs and LEDs. The device also integrates a control block with an external MOS transistor for charging and discharging of electrochromic (dimmable) mirror glasses.

ST is the world’s largest supplier of car-door electronics, with more than 100 million door-actuator devices shipped over the past ten years. Designed for state-of-the-art automotive door-module applications, ST’s market-proven devices are renowned and recognized for their scalability, small size, advanced power-management functionality, and superior thermal performance.

The newest addition to ST’s family of microcontroller-driven multi-functional car-door actuator drivers, the L99DZ80 is available in volumes. For pricing options, please contact your ST sales office.

SAP Achieves 2011 Sustainability Goals with Increases in Carbon Efficiency, Women in Management and Employee Engagement

Executing on its commitment to help the world run better and improve people’s lives, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced its preliminary sustainability performance results for 2011. As a leading provider of sustainability solutions, SAP also strives to implement sustainable business practices across its own global operations.

For the fifth consecutive year, SAP has increased its carbon efficiency from 36.4 grams per Euro in 2010 to 34.3 grams per Euro in 2011 (measured in emissions caused per Euro revenue). Due to software revenue increases of 25 percent at constant currencies, the company’s worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased eight percent to 490 kilotons in comparison to 455 kilotons, including Sybase, in 2010. Despite the increase in carbon emissions, SAP beat its published 2011 target by three percent and remains on track to achieve its target of reducing emissions to year-2000 levels by 2020. The company’s focused energy and sustainability initiatives have led to a cumulative cost avoidance of EUR190 million since 2008 and EUR25 million alone in 2011, in comparison to a business as usual extrapolation based on 2007.

Part of SAP’s overall sustainability goals is fostering a diverse workforce, which includes increasing the number of women in management. In 2011, the company employed 18.6 percent women in management, compared to 17.9 percent in 2010. SAP has set a long-term target to increase the share of women in management to 25 percent by the year 2017, and has started a variety of internal activities, including mentoring and coaching.

Other achievements in 2011 include an increase in employee engagement. SAP measures its employees’ motivation and satisfaction at work with the help of a survey that is the basis for the computation of its employee engagement index. During 2011, the index grew by nine percentage points to the level of 77 percent, a significant increase in comparison to last year. Additionally, the Business Health Culture Index assesses how employees feel about their personal well-being and the company work environment. It increased from 59 percent favorability in 2010 to 65 percent in 2011.

“SAP has made sustainability its purpose, as business software innovation helps companies grow more profitably and responsibly,” said Peter Graf, chief sustainability officer, SAP AG. “In 2011, we’ve been able to make significant strides toward more sustainable business practices across the board. However, it is also clear that more work needs to be done to hit our long-term targets, including the reduction of our energy consumption and accompanying emissions to year-2000 level by 2020.”

For the complete quarterly update, including emissions data, access the 2010 SAP Sustainability Report at www.sapsustainabilityreport.com. For more information, visit the SAP Newsroom. Follow SAP on Twitter at @sapnews and @sustainableSAP.

McAfee Application Control provides endpoint security

The latest release of McAfee Application Control is integrated with McAfee Global Threat Intelligence to show the file reputation of every file in the enterprise. This feature coupled with whitelisting and memory protection makes it an ideal solution for blocking advanced persistent threats and zero-day attacks. The solution is centrally managed by McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator software and uses a dynamic trust model which reduces costs by eliminating expensive manual support requirements.
McAfee Application Control is now a powerful solution for corporate desktops with the introduction of a set of desktop-specific features including friendly end user notifications and approval requests.  Protecting the desktop and the endpoint is essential as that is often a vulnerable point subject to human error.  Employees and online users can unintentionally introduce software that installs malware, creates support issues, and violates software licenses — compromising systems and the overall business.  McAfee Application Control allows only trusted applications to run on the company’s endpoints and servers.

McAfee Application Control Key Features:

·         McAfee Global Threat Intelligence – a cloud based knowledge of reputation of files which is used by McAfee Application Control to classify applications as good or bad. This feature indicates whether any malware is being whitelisted inadvertently and also highlights files without a reputation, which need to be investigated internally.

·         Dynamic Whitelisting - can configure it such that the whitelist will grow dynamically when systems are patched and updated, which alleviates the hassle of manual updates to the whitelist.

·         Memory Protection - helps ensure that the whitelisted programs which might contain some inherent vulnerabilities cannot be exploited through a buffer overflow or other means. This feature helps prevent complex threats from circumventing whitelisting.

·         McAfee Ecosystem - well integrated within the McAfee product ecosystem to create a multi-faceted whitelisting solution.  Integration with the ePolicy Orchestrator platform gives organizations a single security console to manage all their security solutions thus improving operational efficiency. Additionally, integration with McAfee Risk Advisor helps prioritize which systems to patch first and offers visibility on whether or not McAfee Application Control gives them coverage from the most recent threats. Building upon the whitelisting capabilities, is McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention which can be used to firewall files with unknown reputations.

“As enterprises face an avalanche of unknown software from the web, McAfee Application Control provides the essential layer of defense for protecting enterprises from advanced unknown threats,” said Martin Ward, senior director of endpoint solutions at McAfee.  “McAfee is now extending this protection which has been available on servers and fixed function devices to corporate desktops in a solution which is scalable to the largest enterprises.”
