Woodland brings ‘Earth Hour’ initiative to Bengaluru in association with WWF

Press Release:Woodland brings ‘Earth Hour’ initiative to Bengaluru in association with WWF
Woodland, country’s leading outdoor adventure gear brand joined hands with WWF this year on occasion of Earth Hour supporting its theme - “Switch to Renewable Energy”. Earth Hour will be celebrated globally on 23rd March 2013 between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM. As mere turning off lights for an hour will not suffice, Woodland therefore is encouraging to take the Earth Hour to the next level of switching to Renewable Energy which is the highlight of the WWF campaign this year.

Woodland exclusive store on Commercial Street, Bengaluru is going to propagate the theme by special installations in the store for public awareness and participation. Woodland has installed a specially designed stationary bi-cycle with a battery as part of the initiative. Excited Bengalurians are actively taking part in generating power manually by peddling the cycle that will later illuminate the store during the earth hour celebrations at Woodland Stores.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Harkirat Singh, Managing Director, Woodland said, “Earth Hour is an International phenomenon that has been successfully led and nurtured by WWF. The concept revolves around conservation, creating sustainable environment that is totally in alignment with a brand like us. We are proud and excited to associate with them for this outreach programme and get this to Karnataka. Karnataka is known to be an environment conscious state and thus, we see a lot of people participation for our campaigns in the state. We are already running a pilot project of becoming Carbon Neutral starting with our retail stores present in Karnataka that will be later upscaled on a national level. We will continue to partner with such like-minded organizations; encouraging participation from Woodlanders. Our mission is to highlight our stand as an eco-friendly brand and we have embarked on several eco-friendly initiatives to accomplish the same.”

As part of this year’s Earth Hour celebrations, Woodland aims to show its ongoing support by lighting homes in remote villages through solar lanterns. The company has already started to make their contribution towards the cause by collecting a contribution of Rs. 10/- per invoice (optional) from Woodland’s Proplaneteers through sales across its retail chain. This is the first step and soon needy villages will be rightly identified & lighted.

It is also a notable fact that Woodland’s Karnataka based chain of retail stores is aiming to become ‘Carbon Neutral’ through its on-going Carbon Neutrality campaign. The campaign was launched by Woodland sometime back under its environmentally responsible CSR initiative ‘ProPlanet’ while realizing the importance of eco-consciousness and for many years now has embraced it as one of its key objectives.

Initiatives to be undertaken at Bengaluru and other stores in India:

All Woodland stores to switch off lights during the Earth hour and light a specially designed eco-friendly candles.
Woodland stores across the country will be selling exclusive Earth Hour branded Smoke-Free Candles with every sale (optional) to encourage power switch off. The proceeds from the candle sale will go towards lighting homes
A mobile pledge wall is on the run to selected woodland stores where public can sign and share their thoughts and ideas and pledge their support towards “Earth Hour” campaign
Apart from Bengaluru, Woodland stores at Delhi, Mumbai, & Chandigarh will also witness these special installation.

WWF Earth Hour is a symbol of uniting the earth and driving every individual to a single cause at the same time. This initiative was first adopted in Sydney in 2007 to combat climate change, after which WWF has added many other countries to its circumference. The concept of Earth Hour is to bring down everyone small or big under the same roof and support the cause and contribute his/her bit to environment conservation.

The Earth Hour Campaign falls in tune with Woodland’s CSR initiative ‘ProPlanet’ that is committed to making the planet a better place to live in. The ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation and increase their participation in the conservation of nature. As part of this objective, Woodland plans to reduce their environmental impact to zero by 2015 and is in the process of making its retail chain, country’s first carbon neutral retail chain.

As a matter of fact, it is Woodland’s constant endeavor to discover and invest in recyclable products.
