With the recent launch of the Product Council, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) today took another stride towards achieving the industry vision outlined by the Narayana Murthy Committee earlier this year. Mr. Vijay Ratnaparkhe, President & MD Robert Bosch Engineering & Business Solutions was announced as the Chairman of the NASSCOM Engineering Council 2013-15.
The Engineering Council envisions enabling India as a global and competitive engineering destination in the coming years. India is fast emerging as an Engineering and Design hub for various vertical domains including the likes of Automobiles, Aerospace, Semiconductor, Telecom, Computing and Hi-tech etc. The country houses over 750 ER&D companies that provide cutting edge solutions and partner with global customers for product development and design. Many of the global corporations are also leveraging the ER&D capabilities in India to move closer to emerging markets.
At the launch of the Council, NASSCOM highlighted key focus areas to boost the current engineering landscape and position India as a global and competitive ER&D market, The Engineering Council will build a foundation around three core areas that will lay emphasis on strengthening the current engineering ecosystem, build centers of excellence and position India as a preferred global destination for engineering services and solutions.
India has a large engineering talent pool and the primary role of the council will be establishment of such a COE which will act as a catalyst for the talent pool to choose core engineering as a career path. The council will enable appropriate interfaces with other agencies and work towards building the overall ecosystem to develop the indigenous capability with integration of design, prototype, testing, manufacturing, maintenance and services, thus making India self-reliant in the Engineering technology space. To achieve the goal of USD 37-45 billion revenues by 2020 NASSCOM will also explore other geographies such as APAC and Europe.
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan, Chairman, NASSCOM said,”Indian ER&D services have played a pivotal role in accelerating innovation and establishing India as a design and innovation hub. With a view to strengthen the momentum of ER&D activities and accelerate the capabilities within the Engineering and Design industry in the country, we have now launched the NASSCOM Engineering council. On this occasion, I would like to welcome Mr. Vijay Ratnaparkhe as the newly elected Chair of the NASSCOM Engineering Council and as member of the NASSCOM Executive Council. With his support and vision for the ER&D industry, our focus will be to enhance greater domain capabilities and establish India’s leadership in the ER&D space. We have also got a team of experiential entrepreneurs who along with Vijay are committed towards building a $37-45B engineering industry by 2020.”
“I feel honored to be elected to serve as the next Chair of NASSCOM’s Engineering Council. ER&D is strategic to India and has the potential to bring a steep change to the Indian economy. We are witnessing the rise of ER&Ds that are focused on building deep vertical specializations and pricing models enhancing the ability to share risks. I look forward to working with NASSCOM in providing support to the growing Indian ER&D market through continued transformation and re-invention of engineering business solutions” said Mr. Vijay Ratnaparkhe, Chair, NASSCOM Engineering Council.
According to the present landscape, the total ER&D Export from India is ~USD 11.2 billion. ER&D growth has been driven by several factors - the primary ones being technological advances, changes in competitive landscape and consumer preferences. As per the NASSCOM–Booz Global Engineering R&D report 2012, Indian offshore ER&D market is expected to reach USD 37-45 billion by 2020, driven by an increase in global ER&D spends.
The ER&D services market has played an important role in developing the ER&D capabilities of the country. India is now an emerging epicentre of the global ER&D market with more companies exploiting its supply base for future growth. It is important for major stakeholders of this industry –Government, industry and trade associations to ensure the growth trajectory of the industry and moving it to the next level of product development.
