Gangavaram Port celebrates World Environment Day 2013
Gangavaram Port Limited, India’s deepest and multi-purpose port today celebrated the World Environment Day by initiating a massive Green Belt Development program at the port premises to create awareness and express their commitment towards the environmental sustainability, energy conservation and introduce measure for food safety and protection .  The event was attended by Sri.Ch.Venkata Ramayya, M.L.A. (Gajuwaka Assembly Constituency) along with Sri V. Sheshadri, I.A.S. (Collector & District Magistrate, Visakhapatnam), Sri M.V.Satyanarayana, I.A.S. (Commissioner, G.V.M.C., Visakhapatnam) and Dr. N. Yuva Raj , I.A.S. (Vice-Chairman, VUDA, Visakhapatnam) , Sri K.V. Rao, JCEE, Zonal Officer, A.P. Pollution Control Board, Sri Ravi kumar, Executive Engineer, Regional Office, A.P. Pollution Control Board ,Visakhapatnam  and other A.P. Pollution Control board of Visakhapatnam  Officials along with all employees and staff members of Gangavaram Port Limited. All participants planted saplings and pledged to maintain clean & green surroundings and reduce food wastage for a better tomorrow. 
The 2013 theme for World Environment Day is Think.Eat.Save  . Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages people to reduce ones foodprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger. The theme allows people to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices that one make and empowers them to make informed decisions. The campaign advocates everyone to take action from their home and reduce food waste, save money, minimise the environmental impact of food production and force food production processes to become more efficient.
With a clear focus on the environment sustainability, the World Environment Day celebrations at Gangavaram Port started from June 3rd 2013. The week long celebrations which will go on till June 9th 2013 includes massive green drive comprising of planting more than 10,000 saplings, spreading awareness about food wastage, cleaning & housekeeping at various locations  in and around the  port premises. Under the Green belt development program and Green Visakha Plantation programme GPL plans to plant 65,000 saplings in and around the neighborhood area of port premises this year. This drive will also include GPL’s commitment to honour Green Visakha plantation program under which  GPL will be planting approx. 30,000 saplings in areas around Housing Board Colony, Swatantra Nagar (old & new) colony, Venkanna Palem Village Roads, Sree Nagar Colony  , Gangavaram port Fly over bridge to Fire station i.e  B.C. Road by December 2013 itself. The campaign will include plantation of wide variety of avenue plants such as Raavi, Filtofarm, Bogada, Neredu, Marri, Vepa, Ganuga, Alitonia, Mahagani as per the recommended species by the Green Visakha programme Committee.
Under the Green Visakha programme 2012 Gangavaram Port Ltd successfully completed  the plantation of targeted 20,000 plantation at Yarada  Hills and received the appreciation from the Visakhapatnam authorities for timely completion with 100% survival rate.

We at Gangavaram Port have made significant progress in developing a Green Belt & creating forums for social & economic development.  It’s our endeavor to preserve our natural surrounding and help Vizag become a green city in the near future”.
