Recognizing the need of the hour on World Environment Day, Coca-Cola India today took up the global cry to stop Climate Change and planted 1000 trees at Nalliguda Tank popularly known as Bidadi Lake in Bidadi, Karnataka. A part of a larger restoration project, the plantation drive is one of the steps taken in making the water of the Nalliguda Tank available to the surrounding farmers. Dr. K.M. Najeeb, Regional Director of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB); Dr. K. R. Suryanarayana, Scientist, CGWB; Dr. Inayathulla Masool, Professor of Civil Engineering at Bangalore University planted trees along with other officials.
Nalligudda Tank is an artificial Tank and has Nalligudda village to its east bank and ShettygowdanaDoddi to its west bank. The tank was constructed primary for irrigation of the BidadiHobli. When the Lake was built, it had a water spread area of about 8.9596 Mcm which has now reduced to 6.3378 Mcm. The plantation of trees is a part of the larger project that Coca-Cola India has undertaken as a part of their water stewardship initiatives. These initiatives are based on the responsibility to safely return to nature the amount of water equivalent to what they use in all their beverages and their production and ensure continued support to water neutrality.
Commenting on the occasion, Puneet Varshney, Zonal Vice-President, HCCBPL said, “Water stewardship has played a huge part in the sustainability initiatives of Coca-Cola India. We consider it our responsibility to give back to the environment what we take from it. Located near the HCCBPL bottling plant, it was imperative for us to take on the restoration thereby providing sustainable water solutions to the surrounding villages and farms.”
Partnering with Central Ground Water Board and Bangalore University, the restoration also plans on increasing the water holding capacity of the tank and recharge potential by excavating 168,000 CuM of soil on western side of the tank along with creating three artificial recharge units as well as social reforestation by planting 1000 trees on the eastern side of the tank.
