Akkshaya Foundation to host a seminar on Indian Food and cooking

Akkshaya Foundation is hosting a seminar on Indian Food and Indian cooking on Saturday 1st February, 2014 at 4:00 pm at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills. The seminar will explore and highlight the wisdom of Indian cooking and food. The seminar is an open discussion about how Indians managed their health and therefore all are invited, especially the experienced elders to participate and share their knowledge and wisdom on Indian cooking. Those unable to attend can post their views/opinions, online at http://newtritionclinic.wix.com/newtritionclinic; facebook.com/newtritionclinic

The seminar has great significance as nutritionists have seen a sea change in dietary habits and attitudes of Indians in the past 15 years. When we started our practice as nutrition consultants, only a few dietary modifications were required to make the diet balanced, but we observed the whole relationship with food has changed over the time, says Dr. Suneetha Sapur, Director- Akkshaya Foundation & Nutrition Consultant with L V Prasad Eye Institute & Microsoft Research Development India.

 When did it all change?
• Food from being a way of celebration to a battle, at every meal
• From token of love to a cause of concern.
• From Sadhana to reach our higher self, to counting every calorie as if the world depends on it.
• From Prasadam which was worth offering to Gods with prayer and joy to unhappy guilty gluttony.

Today, due to lack of information and knowledge, Indian food is considered as the unhealthiest food; the low fat, pro-biotic- rich Idly or Dosa are considered as unhealthy Carb (Carbohydrate) rich foods, which needs to be replaced immediately by oats or muesli. Traditional groundnut oil or till oil are fattening and bad for heart which need to be replaced with imported olive oil or Canola oil; so also all Indian vegetables and fruits. Women had 7-10 children without ever finding the need for calcium supplements.

Through this discussion the seminar would like to bring out what food really mean to us and how healthy Indian food is.
