Malnutrition a worry for Bangalore

Malnutrition in Bangalore is a fact and the state needs to wake up to the reality. In a bid to highlight the seriousness of the issue, the Volunteer Action Group of Child Rights and You, (CRY Volunteers who are Child Rights advocates) met the Child Development Protection Officer (CDPO) officers of Madivala, Yeshwantpur, Koramangala and CV Raman Nagar to hand over a report on “Malnutrition in Bangalore”. The report contains findings from CRY volunteers of different anganwadis that fall under the diverse operational areas. The report findings indicate that while the menu has changed about two years ago, the fact of the matter is that 2 children died in the city, owing to malnutrition (June 2013-Jan 2014).

Highlighting the findings of the report, Thangamma Monnappa, Senior Manager, CRY Volunteer Action, said, “The report clearly points to the lack of a dedicated response from the state in ensuring better tracking and enabling better access to nutritional and health entitlements. Furthermore, the lack of awareness amongst the parents to these entitlements is alarming. The idea to take the report to the respective CDPOs is to apprise the concerned officers of the ongoing crisis and to get a response from them for immediate action”. The Volunteer Action team members met Mr Shivramegowda and Ms Veena Hari, CDPOs of Madivala, Yeshwantpur and Koramangala and CV Raman Nagar respectively. The CDPOs have accepted the report and have said that they will follow up on the malnourished children in these areas.
