VCFs EQUITY TO BE SOUGHT TO PROMOTE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN GOVT. BUILDS, SAYS DG, BEE
In view of the emerging possibilities of investment limits exceeding rupees five lakh thousand crores in promotion of energy efficiency initiatives by 2025 across the country, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) will engage Venture Capital Funds (VCFs) to let them park their equity in promotion of such initiatives through energy efficiency utilities in government and municipalities owned buildings.

Disclosing this at a National Conference on “Energy Efficiency and Conservation” organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today, BEE Director General, Dr. Ajay Mathur also added that VCFs would be encouraged to park their funds in promotion of energy efficiency to an extent of 1/3 of the total cost of such projects.

An official decision to this effect has been taken, he added clarifying that the government would initially encourage VCFs to promote energy efficiency to drastically curtail power consumption in buildings, owned by government and municipalities through out the country.

According to Dr. Mathur, as per current estimates, roughly about 250000 crores of annual investments are going towards promotion of energy efficiency, resulting in to substantial reduction of energy bills, a vast percentage of which falls in the construction sector.

The BEE has already evolved energy efficiency building codes, implementation of which has been made mandatory and the five State Governments have already notified them and 17 more are in the process of notifying them, he informed without divulging their names but added that non compliance of such codes would be met with stringent penalties.  The State Governments, Dr. Mathur further said were interested and insisting as to who would verify the compliance of the codes for which the answer is BEE nominated engineers.

In the last 10 to 12 years, lot of innovations have been effected and incorporated in the energy efficiency drive which hugely benefited the owners of commercial properties and households, who chose for adoption of energy efficiency appliances since their monthly energy consumption was reduced by about 40%, amounting to 1/3 of their monthly energy savings, pointed out Dr. Mathur.

Mr. Prabhat Kumar, Joint Secretary, Energy Security & ITP, Ministry of External Affairs who also spoke on the occasion, emphasized the need for bringing in modern technologies from advanced economies to enable India intensify its drive for insertion of energy efficiency both and commercial and household levels.

The Ministry of External Affairs has been engaged in dialogues with European Union, Germany, Japan and other such countries for transfer of advance technologies so that such innovations are brought in India to help it save and reduced energy consumption since 35-40% of India’s total import bill fell in its energy basket, pointed out Mr. Kumar.

Among others, who also made their presentation comprised Mr. Abhay bakre, Executive Director, PCRA and Mr. Piyush Kant, Senior Manager, GCE Consultants India Pvt. Ltd.
