Exclusive Women’s Cycle Ride to commemorate the International Women’s Day in Hyderabad
Hyderabad Bicycling Club (HBC) & Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) hosted an Exclusive Women’s Cycle Ride to commemorate the International Women’s Day, from Gachibowli Bike Station on Saturday. Ms Minnie Mathew, IAS (Retd.), Former Chief Secretary, Govt of A.P. & Member, CAT, Hyderabad Bench, flagged off the ten kms ride from Gachibowli Bike Station to Kothaguda junction and back. Mr. N.V.S. Reddy, MD, Hyderabad Metro Rail and Mr. D. V. Manohar, Chairman, Hyderabad Bicycling Club & Past Chairman, CII, were present on the occasion. The all women, colourful ride had several prominent women taking part including Dr Suchitra Ella, Joint MD of Bharat Biotech & Chairperson, Indian Women Network, Southern Region; Ms Vanitha Datla, Vice Chairperson, CII & Chairperson, Indian Women Network, Hyderabad Region; Dr Savita Date, Indian Women Network, Health & Wellness Convener; Ms Kiran Dembla, Celebrity fitness expert; Ms Sita Lakshmi, Appellate Dy Commissioner, Commercial Taxes and Dr Preethi Meena, IAS, Zonal Commissioner, GHMC.

The historic ride had over 400 women from different walks of life enthusiastically participating and expressing their solidarity for women empowerment and gender equality. The fun they were having and the camaraderie amongst them made the ride memorable.

Ms Minnie Mathew said one of the vital prerequisites for women empowerment is easy mobility; bicycle is an apt mode of transport which promotes healthy living and safe environment. Taking to bicycling on a big day like this, is a good beginning. This impressive ride should see more and more women wheeling on the bicycle in the city.

Mr. N.V.S. Reddy, MD, Hyderabad Metro Rail, said our endeavour is to make bicycle ride popular amongst the citizens of Hyderabad and the International Women’s Day is the most opportune day to spread the message amongst women. This pleasant all women ride has made a mark and should motivate several to opt for bicycle as their mode of transport.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. D. V. Manohar, Chairman, Hyderabad Bicycling Club & Past Chairman, CII, said, this event on a momentous day has proclaimed women empowerment, protection of environment and promotion of healthy living. This all women ride will encourage and popularize bicycle as a mode of transport amongst Hyderabadis.

HBC has a membership of about 4800 active cyclists and vigorously promoting cycling to contain the problems of vehicular pollution and traffic congestion.  HBC is operating two bike stations at Necklace road and Gachibowli and promoting cycling tracks with the support of Hyderabad Metro Rail, GHMC and APIIC.  Hyderabad Metro Rail and HBC are planning to set up bike stations at all metro stations for the convenience of commuters to provide last mile connectivity.
