Cricket is undoubtedly India’s most watched and loved sport; and cricketers are role models for men across the nation. It wasn’t long ago when cricket was considered a Gentlemen’s game. But the recent rise of on field aggression and personal sledging has led the fans to question the sportsmanship of the players in the game.
Ex-Cricketers Anil Kumble, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Rahul Dravid and Cricket Enthusiast Mandira Bedi came together in Bengaluru in support of Gillette’s unique initiative ‘Men of Inner Steel’. The expert panel joined forces to bring to light the need to keep the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play alive in current times. The panel emphasized on how cricket and cricketers are moving away from role model behavior, when they are entrusted with the moral responsibility of doing the right thing, leading by example.
Rahul Dravid, the Wall of Indian cricket and Gillette’s Brand ambassador in India, elaborated on the initiative, “As a cricketer and dad, I am glad that Gillette has provided us with a platform to have this discussion. Through this initiative we want to send the message that a cricketer is a role model for his son and also for men across the nation and must set the example of fair play and sportsmanship by displaying the right inner steel values at all times like passion for winning, doing the right thing and playing with integrity at all times. Gillette recognizes that cricket is a test for fans and players alike and requires an unwavering commitment and dedication to the colors of their country. With this aim in mind and in support to the passion of cricket fans, Gillette has introduced New Special edition INDIA engraved razors in 2 models in the market, Gillette FUSION at INR 299/- and MACH3 at INR 109/-.”
Anil Kumble, legendary Indian cricketer also added, “As a Dad one thing I have realized more so ever post my active cricket life is kids do look up to Cricketers as role models and enact their on-field behavior. Our Young cricketers these days are exposed to new formats of the game which test their physical as well as mental strength. The demanding nature of the game puts tremendous pressure on the players and the team. This is where their inner values come into play. They need to know as cricketers they are role models to the nation’s youth and need to embody the right values. As a Dad & an Ex-cricketer I really agree and support this brilliant & much needed initiative by Gillette asking our cricketers to be role models and showcase inner steel values. It is very easy during this high adrenaline games to lose focus and move away from right role model behavior. As a concerned Dad my request to all our cricketers would be to be Role models first and practice the right inner steel values.”
Krishnamachari Srikkanth, known as the Indiana Jones of Indian cricket during his time and a well-known commentator said, “I believe actions speak louder than words.  As a cricketer and dad, my advice to younger cricketers is to be focused and let your game do the talking. Even before my son Anirudha started playing domestic cricket, I have encouraged him to be a true sportsman and play a clean game. Aggression and passion should be showed though your actions, by the way you bowl or bat or field and not by abusing or sledging. Cricketers should play with inner steel values as a duty to their fans. Having the right attitude on field helps the cricketer win the game with integrity”
