Indian government has filed an appeal in England for extradition of Raymond Varley, who is facing charges of sexual offences against children in India committed between 1989 and 1991.
The issue figured during the meeting Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj with the visiting UK Secretary of State Mr. William Hague. Sushma Swaraj did point out the details, that he is required in Goa; and that India is very keen on his extradition.
A District Judge in England, admitting Varley’s plea that he was suffering from dementia and refused to grant the Indian government’s request for his extradition.
Raymond Varley, 66, a teacher from Halifax, is accused of making repeated trips to Goa during the 1980s and early 1990s to abuse children by paying the head of an orphanage where more than 150 boys and girls were sadistically abused and tortured. He was arrested on the basis of a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol, after a Goa court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. However, he was arrested in Thailand, and for reasons still unknown, sent to England, and not India.
