British actor and film director Richard Attenborough best known for his 1982 classic “Gandhi” died on Sunday at the age of 90.Gandhi an intimate biographical film on India's Father of the nation M.K.Gandhi established him as one of Britain's best-known cinema personalities and won him a string of international awards.
Gandhi was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won eight, including best picture, best director, best cinematography, best original screenplay and best actor (Mr. Kingsley).
The $22-million epic ended up earning 20 times of its production cost. Part of the share of the profits from “Gandhi" went to organizations like the Save the Children Fund and Gandhi ashrams in India.
In his acceptance speech at Oscar’s awards for Gandhi Attenborough said: "Gandhi believed if we could but agree, simplistic though it be, that if we do not resort to violence then the route to solving problems would be much different than the one we take."
