#Medical shops down shutters to protest against #online #medicine sales

Over 8,00,000 medical shops across the country are closed today as part of a nationwide strike against online pharmacy business.
Opposing the move of the government to regularise sale of medicines through Internet, All-India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has said that the government had failed to understand that it was illegal to sell medicines on the Internet under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. They also blamed the government for not examining the adverse affects of Internet pharmacy. They want government to focus on multinational drug companies who are having more then 300 per cent of profit margin. The issue raised by shopkeepers is that 'web sites' are selling prescription drugs online without prescription.

But a number of the large chains are allowing customers to place their prescription orders online. This is perfectly consistent with medical safety laws, but it is hurting the businesses that are not online.
