Life Sciences in North East England

North East England has a successful and thriving healthcare and life sciences economy, worth £4 billion and employing 140,000 people. The region is a major hub for pharmaceutical manufacture with the extensive processing infrastructure centered around Tees Valley : this part of the region contributes one third of the UK ’s pharmaceutical gross domestic product (GDP).

The region’s research and clinical base covers a wide range of disciplines: Oncology; Ageing and Health; Genetics; Plant Biotechnology; Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine; Infectious Diseases; Biologics; Systems and Cell Biology; and Diagnostics & Medical Devices. North East England’s £10m Life Knowledge Park is one of only six UK genetic research centres aimed at fundamental improvements in human health.

The commercial stem cell science and regenerative medicine industry is supported by the Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (Cels) which drives the life, science and healthcare economy of the North East ‐ and the International Centre for Life is UK’s first biotechnology village. The region is home to global pharmaceutical companies such as Sanofi‐Aventis, GSK and Merck Sharp & Dohme; world leaders in biologics manufacturing such as Avecia Life Sciences.
