Dr. Girish Karnad launches ‘Infant hearing screening’ at Rajans Speech and Hearing centre

Rajan’s Speech and Hearing, Bangalore’s most renowned hearing and speech centre introduces, “Infant hearing screening”. Noted theater personality Dr. Girish Karnad was present at the event to launch the program. Dr. Karnard spoke about the social stigma attached to hearing loss and how good hearing is essential for the social and intellectual development of infants and young children.

Hearing loss is a hidden disability; new born hearing screening is a simple method of checking if a baby’s hearing is intact. It is done by sophisticated instruments that will not affect the baby. Communication plays a vital role in the social interaction which is part of an active lifestyle and hearing is the key to good communication.

Speaking at the event, Dr Girish Karnad, 73, says “By launching this Infant hearing screening program I want to get people talking about hearing difficulties and early identification and rehabilitation of people with hearing aids” Incidentally Dr Girish Karnad also suffers from higher frequency hearing loss and wears hearing aids in both ears. ‘I gradually lost my hearing a few years ago and was missing parts of conversations with family members and in group discussions. I have been using hearing aids for sometime now and with passing of time I am enjoying the quality and richness of sounds in life”

Studies done shown that hearing loss is the most common birth defect with an incidence rate of 3 for every 1,000 babies born every year. It is vitally important to have a baby’s hearing tested before one leaves the hospital after the delivery. Hearing problems need to be addressed as early as possible so that action is taken at an early stage to effectively develop speech and language in the child. The first year of life is critical to the development of normal speech and language.

RSHC uses two simple techniques to test the hearing ability of children 1). OAE- Otoacoustic emissions test the functionality of the cochlear hair, through miniature microphone. If OAE results are absent of abnormal then 2).ABR- Auditory Brainstorm response test are conducted, these test the baby’s ability to hear soft sounds through small earphones. Early detection helps in early treatment and aids in the normal development of the child. Rajan’s Speech and Hearing clinics are present across- Residency Road, Koramangla, Indranagar and Malleshwaram in Bangalore.
