Breast cancer has been known to educated women and caregivers throughout history, but modesty and horror at the consequences of a largely untreatable disease made it a taboo subject. Today, while there is awareness of the disease, awareness of its causes, symptoms, treatment and preventive care are still largely unclear to the majority of people. As part of their community building initiatives, Inorbit Mall, Hyderabad, in association with Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar on Saturday, 22nd June, 2013.
Breast Cancer can be a very stressful experience for most women as it not only affects them physically but also causes emotional trauma. It is necessary to help women, who have either suffered or are suffering from breast cancer, cope with the stress. The seminar aimed at providing an overall perspective; detection, treatment and emotional help, to breast cancer.
On Saturday afternoon, Inorbit Mall saw a large number of people gathered for the same cause; to empower women and sensitize people towards the issue of breast cancer and the myths around it.
There are several myths associated with breast cancer. Some people believe that older women suffer from breast cancer, whereas some believe that breast feeding reduces the chances of breast cancer. Some people believe that breast cancer does not occur in men whereas others think that taking contraceptives causes cancer. Due to this stigma associated with breast cancer and lack of education most people are unable to detect early signs of the disease and fail to get treated. It is necessary to create awareness as people are not informed about the causes and symptoms of breast cancer. In a bid to address this issue, Dr. P Raghuram, CEO and Director of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation highlighted common facts and myths related to breast cancer through presentation and talk. The organization that has been fighting for breast cancer for years now, hoped that with this event more and more people become aware of the issue.
Critically acclaimed and award winning film actor and director Nandita Das, who is also actively involved with issues of women empowerment, was also seen addressing the crowd.
“It is very unfortunate that even urban India fails to understand how to deal with a sensitive issue like breast cancer. We at Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation aim at holding campaigns and conducting events such as this, to bring people together and spread the message of getting familiar with symptoms, causes, treatment and ways of coping with breast cancer. We hope that larger number of people get involved with us in spreading awareness” Said Dr. P Raghuram, CEO and Director of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation at the event.
At the event, Mr. Kishore Bhatija Managing Director and CEO of Inorbit Malls Pvt Ltd said “Inorbit Mall is very happy to provide a platform for a noble cause like this. Breast Cancer is not just a type of cancer, but has several taboos and myths associated with it and so it is necessary to spread awareness about this issue. Inorbit Mall is actively involved with working for social causes and taking up community building initiatives.
