EVOLVING SOURCES OF NEWS FOR MEDIA – A STUDY Report by IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication) and 20:20 MSL

EVOLVING SOURCES OF NEWS FOR MEDIA
This research, conducted with a stratified sample of 309 journalists across India, was initiated with the objective to understand the changing patterns of news sourcing by media persons and the concomitant effect on the news story writing. This first-of-its-kind research combined the academic expertise of IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication) with the professional rigour of 20:20 MSL to arrive at insights that would benefit India’s media and communications industry.

We have all experienced the changing patterns of news sourcing by journalists with the advent of the internet, and more specifically social media. Being in the business of communications, it is critical for us to understand how journalists consume information in order to reach out to them most effectively. Here is the link to the report:

http://slidesha.re/13SfZoS

The research threw up some very interesting insights, the key ones being:

•    A majority of journalists cutting across age, gender and specialization use the Internet to develop their stories. The benefits they garner from the digital space range from story conceptualization and content validation to background research and insights into current and evolving news updates and trends.
•    Social networking sites have evolved as an important platform for journalists, who leverage them to gauge public opinion during crisis situations.
•    Company websites are accessed to get authentic information, especially for quotes.
•    PR/communication agencies and companies need to use the Net vigorously to reach out to the journalists faster. Communication agencies are best placed advising their clients to post crisp content, sound bytes, clips and pictures on their web sites as journalists, especially in crisis situations, look for authentic pieces of information amid grapevine. They also look for quotes from company spokespersons that could easily be made available through company web sites.
•    The traditional way of writing and sending press releases has long become outdated. There is clearly a need to reinvent touch points, formats, styles and objectives of press releases when over 47 percent journalists use less than 10 percent of the press releases they receive.
•    It is crucial for the sources of dispatching news releases to be exclusive. Checking on the veracity of sources involves identifying more innovative touch points across social media, company web sites and blogs, among others.

New gTLDs will change the Internet

With nearly 2.09 billion1 global users and 100 million2 users in India, the Internet has come to play a central role in our social and economic lives. We use social networking to keep in touch with friends and family; we use search engines to locate information; we shop, bank and arrange vacations online. The Internet’s pervasiveness can make us wonder how we went about our daily lives before the existence of this medium.

Just like every major invention before it – the telephone and automobile for example, the Internet too has evolved and changed over the years. The year 2012 will be significant as it is remembered for one such profound change - the introduction of new generic Top Level Domains (new gTLDs) that are set to revolutionize the domain name addressing system as we know it.

New gTLDs: changing the Internet

For more than 25 years now, the world has been familiar with gTLDs and country code TLDs. TLDs are the collections of Internet real estate and are represented by the characters on the right side of the “dot” in a domain name. An example of this is .com, which is the most popular gTLD3 in use today while examples of ccTLDs include .in, .ru, .au among the approximately 250 cc TLDs that exist.

This structure of the domain name space as we know it today is poised to undergo a profound change with the launch of new gTLDS. New gTLDs are a result of a recent approval by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to expand the number of gTLDs. Under the program, applicants and/or entities themselves can define their gTLD which could be a brand, community, geography or a generic term. For example, a business could apply for its own new gTLD such as “.yourcompany”.

With the launch of new gTLDs, the Internet’s naming system will be limited only by the human imagination. Internet address names will be able to end with almost any word in any language using any script.

About new gTLDs

New gTLDs will offer organizations, cities and communities around the world with unprecedented opportunities to acquire their very own new gTLD to market their brand, products, community or cause in new and innovative ways. New gTLDs will change the way people find information on the Internet and how businesses plan and structure their online presence. New gTLDs are expected to be organized across four main types –

Geographic – Geographic gTLDs may enable cities and regions to promote greater recognition of their area, potentially generate additional revenue, and better serve constituents. Example of a geographic gTLD is “.hyderabad”.

Brand - Brand gTLDs may provide an excellent opportunity for corporations to secure their online namespace. A Brand gTLD — for example, ".yourcompany" — could potentially provide a means for brand owners to create new ways to extend their trusted brand and services to partners, resellers, and customers, enhance brand trust and protect their brands and trademarks.

Community - Consortia of like-minded organizations that share common missions, goals, and challenges may wish to apply for Community gTLDs to better promote, protect, guide, and serve their communities.

Generic terms - Forward-thinking organizations and innovative entrepreneurs are likely to apply for generic term gTLDs so that they can pursue new business opportunities or build their online presence. Examples of generic gTLDs include ".internet" or ".food".

Application timelines for new gTLDs

ICANN has announced that they will begin taking applications for new gTLDs in January of 20124. The application period will have a limited time window, and once it is closed anyone who missed the application deadline will have to possibly wait more than a year before another application window opens. ICANN will process all the applications, address any disputes and then add the gTLDs that have been approved to the Internet Root, enabling any second-level domain names registered on that domain to go live, sometime in the latter part of 2012 or early 2013.

Given the timelines for application, it becomes critical for potential applicants to develop their own strategy of how a new gTLD can extend their brand, community or city, while considering the cost-benefit and IP risk analysis of engaging in the new gTLD program. Taking a fully informed decision of whether they wish to be a first mover or a follower regarding their own potential new gTLD is critical for applicants at this stage.

Applicants for any new gTLD will be required to demonstrate organizational, operational, and financial capability. The complexity of the application process may necessitate working with an experienced registry service provider. As the world’s largest registry, Verisign has an extensive history in operating the world’s best-known extensions, .com and .net, and can help organizations throughout the entire application process.

The Internet is changing

The Internet is changing, and it will have a profound effect on the way that people interact and do business in the future. With the introduction of new gTLDs, organizations will have to consider extending their online strategy. A domain name strategy is quickly becoming critical for any organization conducting business or wanting to engage customers online. Ignoring the profound impact of the rapid evolution of the Internet could turn out to be a missed opportunity to extend their brand deeper into the Internet.

3 The .com and .net TLDs surpassed a combined total of 110 million domain names in the second quarter of 2011, according to the Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief, Volume 8, Issue 3, August 2011.

4 As per information in the ICANN presentation available at http://www.icann.org/en/minutes/timeline-New-gtld-program-20jun11.pdf, the application for new gTLD will open on 12 January 2012

MISYS accelerates VALUE FROM NEW BUSINESS ACQUISITIONS WITH INFORMATICA CLOUD

Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA), the world’s number one independent provider of data integration software, today announced that Misys, a leader in application software and services to the global financial services industry, is deriving value more quickly from new business acquisitions using the Informatica Cloud. The U.K.-based company was recently able to integrate data from the newly-acquired company Sophis into the Misys Salesforce CRM platform in only two days using the cloud data integration solution.

“Informatica Cloud ensures that the data Misys relies on every day is visible and measurable,” says Kimberly Jansen, director, CRM Operations at Misys. “One of the great advantages of Informatica Cloud is that it is easy for non-technical users to administer and manage. This means the on-demand data integration service can be managed without in-depth coding resources. We have made a substantial investment in cloud computing through our Salesforce CRM investment and Informatica Cloud ensures we derive the maximum value from that investment.”

Misys was an early customer of the Salesforce CRM software as a service (SaaS) model, using the flexible, cloud-based approach for almost 10 years to support the company’s sales, marketing and customer service functions. The enterprise-class Informatica Cloud connects Misys’ cloud-based data easily with its multiple, separate on-premise systems. This enables more than 2,000 Misys sales and customer support professionals to access accurate, complete, up-to-date data whenever and wherever they need it.

One of the key areas that Informatica Cloud supports is the Misys Customer Portal, a key component of the Salesforce Service Cloud. More than 10,000 users currently use the portal to log and track support requests as well as find solutions and stay up-to-date with the latest relevant information. Cases are typically complex, mission-critical and demand multiple resources to close them. Misys relies on Informatica Cloud to integrate and synchronize crucial data with this portal from multiple fragmented sources. By introducing a single, shared view of the customer support situation, Misys is able to deliver a more consistently rewarding and responsive service and maintain the loyalty of its financial services customers.

Informatica Cloud provides the critical integration of data spread across disparate Misys contract management systems, providing a single view of contracts across the organization.

“Informatica Cloud is helping Misys gain a competitive advantage by ensuring that data that would otherwise be scattered across the business is accurate, complete and up-to-date,” says Ron Papas, general manager, Informatica Cloud. “This fast, reliable and easy approach to data integration is helping Misys to extend its lead in the financial services application software and services markets, rapidly gain value from business acquisitions and deliver more responsive and effective services.”

Google Invites children to ‘Doodle’ on its India home page

At Google we love to play!- even with our corporate logo. To celebrate scientific and artistic achievements, festivals and historic events, we keep redesigning our logo. Google’s Doodle is an inspiration for many young children and seeing their continuous enthusiasm to contribute to the world of ‘Doodles’, we are happy to announce the commencement of the third Doodle 4 Google competition in India which will also mark Children’s Day celebrations on 14th November 2011.

We are inviting children from across the country to participate in this exciting 'doodling' competition and get a chance to feature their ‘doodle’ on 14th November 2011 on www.google.co.in. The competition is open for all children from the age group of 5 to 16 years. This year, our chosen theme is ‘India’s gift to the world’.

In addition to the winner's doodle appearing on Google.co.in on Nov 14, 2011, the star Doodler will receive a technology starter package which will include a laptop, an year’s Internet connection and a Rs 2,00,000 technology grant for the school that he or she will represent.

Announcing the launch of the third D4G contest, Nikhil Rungta, Country Marketing Head, Google India, said, “Doodle4Google has become a global platform giving young children an opportunity to showcase their talent globally. In India, we have noticed great enthusiasm amongst children toward the Doodle4Google competition. Last year the competition crossed the 100,000 mark from just 4500 entries in the 1st year and we expect it to grow much higher this year.”

Just like last year, the participants will be clubbed in three different categories- 1st to 3rd Standard, 4th to 6th Standard and 7th to 10th Standard. Top Indian art schools will select the top 200 entries from each category which will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The judges will then shortlist 15 doodles from each category, bringing it down to a total of 45 final Doodles.

All the final entries will be exhibited for public voting and based on the number of votes, one winner from each category will be selected. Each of the winners will receive a technology starter kit which consists of a laptop and an Internet connection. Dennis Hwang, the original Google Doodler, will then choose the final winning Doodle from the total 45 finalists.

Participating in the competition is simple:

• Children studying in class 1st to 10th can participate in the competition. These will be divided into three categories- 1st to 3rd Standard; 4th to 6th Standard and; 7th to 10th Standard

• All participants must register on the website (www.google.co.in/doodle4google). The submission may be either individually or through the school. The school route is valid only if the school is organizing to collect and submit the doodles on behalf of their students.

• Last date for submissions is 15th September, 2011.

• After a series of elimination by celebrity panel of judges, 45 best Doodles will be displayed on the gallery (www.google.co.in/doodle4google). These entries will be open for public voting allowing users to vote for their favorite Doodle in each category.

• This year we will have 3 winners in total one from each group

• Winning Doodle will be uploaded on the Google.co.in homepage on 14th November 2011, Children’s Day and all the winners will get a Technology Starter Package.

So gather those art supplies. All it takes to enter is a drawing on paper using your favorite medium (crayons, markers, colored pencils, whatever!) –

For information about the contest and to download/print material for use, log onto:www.google.co.in/doodle4google

About Doodle History:

Over the years, doodles on the Google homepage have made searching on Google more fun and enjoyable for its users worldwide. When doodles were first created, nobody had anticipated how popular and integral they would become to the Google search experience. Nowadays, many users excitedly anticipate the release of each new doodle and some even collect them!

Doodles are known as the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists. Having a little bit of fun with the corporate logo by redesigning it from time to time is unheard of at many companies but at Google, it is a part of the brand. While the doodle is primarily a fun way for the company to recognize events and notable people, it also illustrates the creative and innovative personality of the company itself.

Aruba MOVE Archietecture Enables Wire- Like Performance for Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Dileverd Over Wi- Fi

Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN) today announced that its Mobile Virtual Enterprise (MOVE) architecture for Wi-Fi networking enables wire-like performance of Microsoft Lync Server 2010, with tests showing up to 75 percent better performance for Microsoft Lync Server 2010  compared to an equivalent Cisco Wi-Fi network. The degree of improvement was calculated from mean opinion scores (MOS) after rigorous testing by Aruba and Microsoft, using Microsoft testing and evaluation criteria.
Aruba has also been named a Microsoft Network Infrastructure Optimization Partner. To ensure that end-users experience high audio and video quality with Microsoft Lync, Microsoft has collaborated with several network infrastructure vendors, including Aruba, to provide prescriptive guidance on the networking requirements of Lync. Focused on the needs of Networking and IT Professionals, Network Infrastructure Optimization partners provide documentation, services, and support for companies to optimize their enterprise networks for real-time audio, video, and collaboration with Lync. The Aruba MOVE architecture has also been certified as interoperable with Lync Server 2010, through the ArubaEdge Partner Program.  “The performance testing and associated solution guide for the Aruba wireless infrastructure with Lync Server 2010 will help make it faster and easier for integrators to deploy a combined system,” said Kapil Sharma, principal group program manager of Lync Partner Engineering at Microsoft.  YES Prep Public Schools, a free, open-enrollment public school system that serves 4,200 students across eight schools in the Houston area, needed an access network that would ensure high performance of Lync Server 2010, a collaboration suite used by teachers and staff at all eight YES Prep schools, as well as its headquarters.   “No one here has a desk phone, period,” said Troy Neal, director of information technology at YES Prep. “With the discounts that Microsoft gives K-12 on Microsoft Lync 2010, the quality with which it performs over the Aruba access network, and the cost savings associated with deploying Lync instead of traditional PBX’s, every K-12 school in the country should be doing this. We went from it taking six to nine months and $40,000 to $60,000 dollars to get a school up and running with a voice PBX to two or three weeks at between $300 and $3,000 dollars per site.  As for the video and voice quality over the Aruba wireless network, let’s just say no one can tell it’s wireless, and that pretty much says it all.”      Gartner Research forecasts that growth of PC softphones,  mobile softphones and IP-enabled wireless telephones will outstrip that of wired IP phones in the business telephone market from 2011 to 2015; TDM wireless telephones and both analog and digital telephones are in decline.* The rapid adoption of softphones and wireless phones that serve as the foundation of unified communications solutions makes the availability of a highly-secure and context-aware wireless network a practical necessity.

Google announces Indian Youth Congress and Punjlloyd moving to Google Apps for Business

Today in Mumbai, more than 400 IT and business leaders will join Google executives, industry experts and some of our local partners for the first Google Enterprise Roadshow in India. Themed around ‘The Future of Work’, the roadshow explores how local companies are embracing Google’s enterprise cloud computing solutions to improve company-wide communication, document management and team collaboration. We are seeing strong adoption of Google Apps for Business in India, and today we are excited to announce two new customers that are among the latest to go Google:

Indian Youth Congress (IYC) is the official youth wing of the Indian National Congress and one of the largest youth organizations in the world. After evaluating a number of solutions for email and collaboration, IYC opted to move its more than 28,000 elected officials and volunteers to Google Apps for Business. The collaborative capabilities of Google Apps will help IYC deliver on its mission of transparent and democratic participation and empower its members to work for local development in India using technology.

As Rajeev Satav, National President of IYC, says “Technology is a great enabler in bringing people together and operating efficiently. We’re excited about being the first social organization in India to adopt the latest cloud technology from Google. With Google Apps we will be better equipped to work with India’s youth and leverage the power of technology to conduct programs of local relevance and contribute to our vision.”

Punj Lloyd is a leading global provider of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services in the energy and infrastructure sectors. From the engineering of the world’s largest wheat-based Bioethanol plant in England to the design of the highest reinforced earth wall for an airport in the foothills of the Himalayas, virtually all of Punj Lloyds’ projects require great teamwork and knowledge-sharing among the company’s 24,000 employees.

Yet until now, Punj Lloyd’s teams had no easy way to collaborate with one another. With operations in over 20 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and South Asia, Punj Lloyd’s IT department had the tough job of maintaining a legacy email system with dozens of client applications being used to access email. After evaluating several on-premise and hosted options for email and collaboration, Punj Lloyd chose Google Apps for Business.

The company has just started the transition, and soon employees from different departments and teams working across timezones will be able to share documents and calendars, video chat, and create internal sites that everyone in the company can access. With Google Apps, Punj Lloyd’s IT department no longer has to maintain a legacy email system, and employees benefit from new, modern communication tools designed for team collaboration.

Hundreds of thousands of businesses have chosen to go Google across India. In doing so, they have made a choice to adopt secure and proven web-based productivity tools that are designed for team collaboration and accessibility from any device. We are committed to helping more Indian businesses make the transition to the 100% web world and we firmly believe that this will be a huge improvement for both users and IT departments in all organizations.
