National Instruments Introduces Industry’s Highest Performance PXI Digitizers

National Instruments today released the industry’s highest bandwidth PXI digitizer, complementing the rapidly expanding suite of performance instrumentation available in PXI. Co-developed with Tektronix, the world’s leading manufacturer of oscilloscopes, the NI PXIe-5186 digitizer employs Tektronix, Enabling Technology to achieve up to 5 GHz bandwidth and 12.5 GS/s sample rates. The company also announced the NI PXIe-5185, which delivers 3 GHz bandwidth along with 12.5 GS/s sample rate. Both digitizers are part of the National Instruments PXI-based hardware and software platform, which provides optimized performance for automated test applications.

“We are excited about our work with Tektronix to jointly develop a product that combines the strengths of both companies: Tektronix for high-speed digitization and NI for software-defined instrumentation,” said Dr. James Truchard, president, CEO and cofounder of National Instruments. “These new digitizers further demonstrate the impact of Moore’s Law on test applications, bringing higher performance to smaller footprints such as PXI.”

Proprietary Tektronix performance oscilloscope ASICs in the new digitizers provide the foundation for high-speed signal acquisition with low noise and high linearity, and are based on the highly-reliable IBM 7HP SiGe process. An example of the superior signal fidelity delivered by Tektronix, Enabling Technology is the incredibly low sampling jitter of the digitizer. The very low 500 fs RMS integrated jitter of the digitizers results in a remarkable 5.5 effective number of bits (ENOB) at 5 GHz. National Instruments proprietary technology delivers high-data throughput for faster test execution and precision multimodule timing and synchronization for building high-channel-count, integrated test systems. Designed for the 3U PXI Express platform, the digitizers can stream at rates as fast as 700 MB/s and synchronize channels on multiple modules to within160 ps resolution. These capabilities make the digitizers ideal for applications such as automated production test, semiconductor ATE and high-energy physics measurement systems.

“As the world standard in oscilloscopes, Tektronix is committed to delivering technology that meets our customers’ needs, including automated test users whose production test applications require a card-modular instrument format,” said Kevin Ilcisin, chief technology officer for Tektronix. “Customers benefit from our industry-leading signal acquisition technology complimented by world class instrument control via National Instruments, the pioneer of the PXI standard and the world leader in instrument automation.”

The digitizers work with NI LabVIEW graphical design software for instrument control and automation, the NI LabWindows™/CVI ANSI C software development environment and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development tools for a wide range of programming options. Dr. Girish Karnad launches ‘Infant hearing screening’ at Rajans Speech and Hearing centre

Rajan’s Speech and Hearing, Bangalore’s most renowned hearing and speech centre introduces, “Infant hearing screening”. Noted theater personality Dr. Girish Karnad was present at the event to launch the program. Dr. Karnard spoke about the social stigma attached to hearing loss and how good hearing is essential for the social and intellectual development of infants and young children.

Hearing loss is a hidden disability; new born hearing screening is a simple method of checking if a baby’s hearing is intact. It is done by sophisticated instruments that will not affect the baby. Communication plays a vital role in the social interaction which is part of an active lifestyle and hearing is the key to good communication.

Speaking at the event, Dr Girish Karnad, 73, says “By launching this Infant hearing screening program I want to get people talking about hearing difficulties and early identification and rehabilitation of people with hearing aids” Incidentally Dr Girish Karnad also suffers from higher frequency hearing loss and wears hearing aids in both ears. ‘I gradually lost my hearing a few years ago and was missing parts of conversations with family members and in group discussions. I have been using hearing aids for sometime now and with passing of time I am enjoying the quality and richness of sounds in life”

Studies done shown that hearing loss is the most common birth defect with an incidence rate of 3 for every 1,000 babies born every year. It is vitally important to have a baby’s hearing tested before one leaves the hospital after the delivery. Hearing problems need to be addressed as early as possible so that action is taken at an early stage to effectively develop speech and language in the child. The first year of life is critical to the development of normal speech and language.

RSHC uses two simple techniques to test the hearing ability of children 1). OAE- Otoacoustic emissions test the functionality of the cochlear hair, through miniature microphone. If OAE results are absent of abnormal then 2).ABR- Auditory Brainstorm response test are conducted, these test the baby’s ability to hear soft sounds through small earphones. Early detection helps in early treatment and aids in the normal development of the child. Rajan’s Speech and Hearing clinics are present across- Residency Road, Koramangla, Indranagar and Malleshwaram in Bangalore.

National Instruments Unveils NI LabVIEW for LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Robotics

National Instruments today introduced LabVIEW for LEGO MINDSTORMS, a new education-focused version of the company’s professional LabVIEW graphical system design software. Developed specifically for secondary school students to use with the LEGO Education robotics platform in classrooms or competitions, LabVIEW for LEGO MINDSTORMS is a teaching tool that helps students visually control and program MINDSTORMS NXT robots, while learning the same software used by scientists and engineers. The high-school-focused programming environment joins the already successful line of LEGO Education robotics platforms, which includes LEGO Education WeDo™ software for elementary students and LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT software for middle school students.

“LabVIEW for LEGO MINDSTORMS completes the National Instruments and LEGO Education ‘robotics for all ages’ learning platform,” said Stephan Turnipseed, president of LEGO Education North America. “We now can deliver a framework of age-appropriate, hands-on learning technology and curricula that continuously progress with student skill level and learning objectives, from elementary all the way through university.”

LabVIEW for LEGO MINDSTORMS is optimized for classroom use with instructional videos, tutorials and teaching resources created exclusively for high school students and teachers using LEGO MINDSTORMS Education and TETRIX by Pitsco. It introduces students to advanced concepts such as autonomous robotics and scientific measurements using real-world examples and replacing obscure syntax with an intuitive graphical interface. Because of this, the software is ideal for teachers seeking to engage students with technology in a fun, hands-on way.

“My students learn better when they learn by doing,” said Tim Jump, director of advanced competitive science at Benilde-St. Margaret’s college-preparatory school in St. Louis, Minn. “Incorporating the hands-on learning of LabVIEW and LEGO robotics into my classroom makes it possible for me to explore and experiment right along with the students. The platform not only makes learning engineering fun, but it makes teaching it fun too.”

The software also provides consistency for students participating in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) extracurricular robotics programs, making it possible for students to learn robotics using a singular programming platform across all levels of competition as well as in their classrooms. This learning continuity helps cultivate valuable career-ready skills and proficiency with the LabVIEW platform, which students can use in university and, ultimately, in industry.

LabVIEW for LEGO MINDSTORMS is available for purchase exclusively through LEGO Education and its authorized resellers. Additionally, through a new website, K12Lab.com, National Instruments helps teachers share curriculum materials and connect to a community of educators and technical advisors.

Virtusa Recognized as One of Britain’s Top Employers for 2011

Virtusa Corporation (NASDAQ: VRTU), a global IT services company that offers a broad spectrum of business consulting and outsourcing services, has been certified by the Corporate Research Foundation (CRF) Institute as one of Britain’s Top Employers for 2011, scoring exceptionally well in the categories of Secondary Benefits & Working Conditions and Career Development.

Now in its 11th year, Britain’s Top Employers uses international standards and independent research done by the CRF Institute to identify those companies excelling in HR management. Virtusa was recognized for its outstanding HR policies and exceptional working conditions. Companies were assessed based on key HR-related areas including Primary Benefits, Secondary Benefits & Working Conditions, Training and Development, Career Development, and Company Culture.

“The happiness and well-being of our team members are critical to the success of Virtusa as a company,” said Kris Canekeratne, chairman and CEO of Virtusa. “We founded Virtusa based on a spirit of innovation and it is very gratifying to see our team members continue to demonstrate creativity as they develop solutions that help our clients achieve their business goals and objectives. Our values are clear: we believe in the pursuit of excellence, integrity, respect and leadership. These values form the nucleus of our high-performance culture and our ability to create competitive advantage for our clients. Our team members put their hearts and souls into creating excellence and we are honored to be recognized for creating a conducive work environment.”

“The combination of an aging workforce, the economic recovery, and staff shortages in certain industries is making employers increasingly aware of the importance of selecting and retaining the right people, and making sure they come to work every day feeling motivated and engaged,” says Steven Veenendaal, CEO of the CRF Institute. “This year’s award winners have put the welfare of their employees at the top of their list of priorities and are doing exceptionally well in offering their employees the best working conditions. You will see that translated in the long-term sustainability of these companies.”

CRF was founded in 1991 as a joint initiative of academics, business journalists, trade associations, researchers and international publishers, with a mission of offering independent HR assessment and recognition. The Top Employers methodology was developed by the CRF Institute as a means to carry out this mission, acknowledging companies excelling in HR, leadership and strategy.

This year’s certified organizations were recognized at an awards dinner on March 31 at The Landmark London.

Pramoda and Bhargava, winners of the India Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science (IRIS) will now represent India at the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Los Angeles, California from May 8-13.

Pramoda N.V. and Bhargava C.S. from Shree Ramakrishna High School, Puttur, Karnataka will join 7 other students at ISEF, the world’s largest pre-college science fair, and the only global science competition for students in grades 9-12. Their project titled “Eco-friendly ink from Terminalia Chebula” was among six projects that were selected from over 1300 submissions. Bringing together more than 1600 young students from more than 60 countries, ISEF 2011 is an opportunity for the best young minds in the world to come together to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge projects, and compete for more than US $4 million in awards and scholarships. The Intel ISEF winners are selected based on their creative ability and scientific thought, as well as the thoroughness, skill, and clarity shown in their projects.

At the national level, IRIS encourages investigative research-based science projects and calls for submission that is evaluated by the Scientific Resource Committee (SRC) for selection. These projects then compete at the National Fair of IRIS which is held in November-December, 2010. Among the winners of this event, a group of students was chosen to represent India at ISEF. Over 1300 IRIS project entries were received from across the country under 10 categories that included a range of solutions in the field of physical & life sciences, mathematics, engineering and social sciences. Out of these, 88 projects were showcased at IRIS 2010 held at the Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai, Maharashtra and six projects by 9 students were shortlisted to represent India at ISEF.

These 9 students, including three in the individual category and two teams of three each in the team category, with their winning science and engineering projects will now travel to the U.S. During the week-long ISEF event, students will have the opportunity to meet leading scientists and exchange ideas on various topics in science, research and technology.

“These projects are an illustration of the scientific accomplishments and innovation that exists in this country, which highlight the incredible things that can happen when inspired ideas and the will to make them happen come together,” said Ashutosh Chadha, Director - Corporate Affairs Group, Intel South Asia. “ISEF encourages students to tackle challenging scientific questions through authentic research practices to solve the problems of tomorrow. We believe that today's youth are the country’s future innovators and a key to solving global challenges. .”

ISEF winners are chosen in several categories including behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and engineering: materials & bioengineering, environmental sciences, medicine and health sciences, microbiology and many others. Projects are evaluated by more than 1200 judges from nearly every scientific discipline, each with a Ph.D. or equivalent (six years of related professional experience) in one of the scientific disciplines, and include Nobel laureates and Intel fellows.
