GE Healthare partners with EMBRACE for $ 200 baby warmer

GE Healthcare today announced a global partnership with Embrace to distribute a low-cost infant warmer that looks like a small sleeping bag and can help keep an infant warm for hours. This product will be distributed in India initially to improve rural infant care as an alternative to more expensive warmers.

“At GE we’re focused on the healthymagination tenets of reducing cost while improving quality and access through local solutions like this one,” said Mike Barber, Vice President, GE healthymagination. “This partnership with Embrace is an opportunity to further our commitment to maternal-infant care while increasing local access and reducing infant mortality. Along with our partners, we’re addressing the specific needs of the local healthcare environment and helping to solve critical problems.”

The Embrace Infant Warmer has three components: a sleeping bag, a sealed pouch of wax and a heater. The warmer swaddles the baby and a heated pouch of wax is placed in an adjacent compartment in the sleeping bag. The pouch can be heated via an electrical heater. The Embrace Infant Warmer costs less than $200.

“We are thrilled to have GE Healthcare as a partner in this endeavor to save and improve the lives of babies around the world,” said Jane Chen, CEO, Embrace. “GE Healthcare brings both expertise and global reach to this partnership, and shares our passion to change the world through technological innovations. Together, we can achieve Embrace's mission to give every child an equal chance for a healthy life.”

One of the major contributors to death and illness in infants is hypothermia, a reduction in core body temperature below 95° Fahrenheit. Nearly 20 million low birth weight (LBW) babies are born each year[1], mostly in the developing world, and these babies are especially prone to hypothermia due to insufficient fat beneath the skin. The Embrace Infant Warmer is one potential solution to help keep babies warm and address the risks of hypothermia.

“GE Healthcare is committed to increasing access to new and more affordable forms of newborn thermoregulation in low resource settings in developing nations,” said Carrie Eglinton Manner, General Manager - Maternal-Infant Care, GE Healthcare. “We’re honored to partner with Embrace in the distribution of its Infant Warmer and have always been passionate about working toward a solution to reduce infant mortality rates.”

In alignment with the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), GE is focusing its efforts on MDG 4, “reducing by two-thirds the under-five mortality rate by 2015.” GE is concentrating its efforts on helping the nations that face the longest road to meeting this goal, particularly those in sub-Saharan Africa.

“According to the World Health Organization, at least 50% of global births occur in underserved urban settings where access to affordable technology remains limited,” said Eglinton Manner. “This partnership with Embrace is another step closer towards meeting this goal and addressing the needs of this underserved population.”

Tektronix Announces New Addition to the Industry’s Most Comprehensive PCIe 3.0 Test Solution

Tektronix, Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of oscilloscopes, today announced a new addition to the industry’s most comprehensive solution for PCI Express 3.0. The new offering provides physical layer transmitter (Tx) verification, debug, characterization and compliance testing using Tektronix DPO/DSA/MSO70000 Series oscilloscopes. With this release, Tektronix now offers the broadest and most complete set of physical and protocol layer measurement capabilities for PCI Express.

The PCIe 3.0 architecture provides a low-cost, high-performance I/O technology that includes a new 128b/130b encoding scheme and a data rate of 8 GT/s, doubling the interconnect bandwidth over PCIe 2.0. Based on the same board material (FR4) and connectors as previous generations, PCIe 3.0 represents a far more difficult test challenge with smaller margins and new jitter measurements required to account for increased signal loss in the channel.

The new Tektronix PCIe 3.0 solution (Option PCE3) builds on the success of PCIe Gen 1 and Gen 2 test solutions. Coupled with Serial Data Link Analysis (SDLA) software, it provides a complete solution for verifying transmitter and channel performance of PCIe 3.0 designs and provides support for both the PCIe 3 Base Specification and CEM Specification measurements.

“As the release of the PCIe 3.0 specification nears completion, the hard work of designing, testing and manufacturing silicon and other components that implement the specification is now in full swing,” said Jim Pappas, Director of Technology Initiatives for Intel's Data Center Group. “Due to the complexities of the physical layer within the PCIe 3.0 specification, electrical testing will play a major role to ensure the success and performance of motherboards, adaptor cards and other server-platform components. We value the success of the PCIe 3.0 architecture within the Enterprise market and recognize the contribution Tektronix makes by delivering electrical test solutions which enable the industry.”

The electrical testing support provided by the new Option PCE3 solution complements the Tektronix TLA7SA16 and TLA7SA08 Logic Protocol Analyzer modules, bus support software, and probes announced earlier this year that bring PCIe 3.0 logical and protocol testing support to the TLA7000 Series high-performance logic analyzer family.

Accelerate PCIe 3.0 Validation, Precompliance Testing
With the world’s best over-sampling performance at 100 GS/s, DPO/DSA/MSO70000 Series oscilloscopes deliver the performance and signal fidelity required to meet PCIe 3.0 test challenges. Option PCE3 for these instruments accelerates the analysis and validation of PCIe designs and provides the flexibility to check devices for precompliance or perform device characterization or debug in a single software package.

Serial Data Link Analysis software enables channel de-convolution, convolution and receiver equalization. DPOJET Jitter and Eye-diagram Analysis software provides jitter, eye-diagram and parametric testing. And the P7520 TriMode™ Differential Probe is available for validation and debug of chip-to-chip links, including common mode measurements.

Performance validation and stress testing of PCI Express 3.0 receiver designs will also be critical given the large speed increase in the standard. The BERTScope BSA85C provides stressed pattern testing with jitter and interference added to determine effective Bit Error Ratio from new receiver designs. The BERTScope is complemented by the DPP125B which adds critical pre-emphasis to the stressed pattern, and the CR125A that recovers the embedded clock to allow for eye diagram analysis on the resulting signal. BERTScope provides a true Bit Error Ratio in addition to eye diagram analysis for complete debug of PCIe3.0 receivers.

These tools integrate with the TLA7SA16 and TLA7SA8 Logic Protocol Analyzer modules to provide complete visibility of PCIe 3.0 physical and logical layers. The combination of the two solutions allow for rapid PCIe 3.0 digital debug and validation, analog validation, compliance testing, and device characterization.

“Over the last few years, we’ve been preparing for the release of the Gen 3 serial data standards by increasing the performance and signal fidelity of our oscilloscopes and by working closely with the standards organizations to define test requirements,” said Brian Reich, general manager, Performance Oscilloscopes, Tektronix. “Now that PCIe 3.0 has arrived, we are fully prepared with an industry leading combination of precision oscilloscopes and the broadest range of measurement coverage for this exciting new specification.”

ANSYS and VISTAGY Integrate ANSYS Composite PrepPost and FiberSIM

ANSYS, Inc. (NASDAQ: ANSS), a pioneer of engineering simulation, and VISTAGY, Inc., a leading provider of industry-specific engineering software and services, have taken a major step in closing the loop between composites design and analysis by integrating ANSYS® 13.0 Composite PrepPost™ and FiberSIM® 2010 composites engineering software. This bi-directional integration, enabled by FiberSIM’s Analysis Interface, allows customers to exchange detailed lay-up information between design and analysis quickly and accurately. As a result, users can optimize parts, assemblies and structures more efficiently.

With composites quickly becoming more prominent in a variety of industries — including aerospace, automotive, wind energy and marine — both companies recognized the need for an integrated, bi-directional solution that allows stress engineers and designers to expeditiously exchange accurate composites data for laminate plies and fiber orientations. Traditionally, designers and stress engineers have worked in very different environments, which prevented an efficient exchange of data. This greatly slowed and limited the product development process. As a result of this integration, customers can conduct a faster and more iterative process for optimizing composite parts, can ensure there is no disconnect between part certification and manufacturing since lay-up details can be validated by ANSYS Composite PrepPost, and can be confident that the analysis of the design model is accurate.

“The partnership with ANSYS will enable our customers to develop products around a complete and detailed master model available to both design and stress,” said Dr. Olivier Guillermin, director of product and market strategy at VISTAGY. “The integrated solution will allow engineers to spend less time making sure their designs and analyses sync up and more time innovating. As a result, they’ll be able to reduce errors, shorten development times, and get composite products to market quicker.”

“From an overall product development perspective, a composites solution is not complete without the ability to create an optimal layout — through engineering simulation — well before any manufacturing concerns are addressed. The second part of the process involves the capability to move the product into manufacturing, with assurance that it is still a valid design. The ANSYS and VISTAGY solution does just that,” said Barry Christenson, director of product management at ANSYS. “The sophisticated combined technology offers the capability to reach an end-to-end composites design.”

We used data from multiple sources, including Insights for Search, Google Trends and internal data tools to compile the same. We also filtered out spam and repeat queries to build out lists that best reflect "the spirit of the times." All of the search queries we studied are anonymous - no personal information was used. Except where noted, all of these search terms are most popular for 2010 - ranked in order of the queries with the largest volume of searches this year. In some cases, we list the "fastest rising" queries, which means we found the most popular searches conducted in 2010 and then ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to 2009.

Zeitgeist Explained

Google reveals the internet "Zeitgeist" (German for "the spirit of the times") through an exploration of the billions of search queries we receive every year. In addition to the year-end Zeitgeist, which highlights the top trends of 2009, we also have several tools that give insight into global, regional, past and present search trends. Google Zeitgeist tools can never be used to identify individual users because we rely on anonymized, aggregated counts of how often certain search queries occur over time. These tools are available year-round for you to play with, explore, and learn from: www.google.com/zeitgeist

"On The Swing" - A play inspired by the episodes of true life-stories

The concept of Navarasa encapsulates the moods of almost all art forms. While we increasingly witness Hasya or more popularly known as “HA HA Theatre” which is in vouge in Bangalore theatre scenario; at Dhaaran, we are a like minded team that plans to resort back to the original charms of theatre with an original script and a meaningful attempt on the story.

Written by Sudipta Banerjee and Namrta Dhar, “On The Swing” doesn’t stick to any particular genre of Navarasa but to life ! - An emotive love story that surfaces with Shringar, Hasya, Rudra, Karuna, Vatsalya and Bibhatsa, and much more from what we can relate in our personal lives. The story is inspired by episode of true life-stories and is knitted as one. Initially paced slow, the story picks momentum as it unfolds and takes the audience through a roller-coaster of varied emotions that they can relate with happenings in their own individual homes.

“On The Swing” captures a life span of the story of its characters, highlighting an emotive love story of Reema Banerjee, a typical Indian girl form a small town in Howrah stricken with typical Indian cultural beliefs. Set in an upper class household, it is a dream come true journey of Reema from small town in West Bengal to capital of India. However, in the entire transformation, she is chained to her belief system, fears and seeks solace or “Shanti” on the swing which is her embodiment of a company. As her life passes through set life-stages, she sorts her life but in an unwitting and untoward manner – just like many of us.

“On The Swing” is also the story of Dev Banerjee, a successful novelist who has made it big in Bengali literary field. Driven by logic and unaffected by the norms of the world, he is man living by his own philosophies and his individualism is loaded with wit and sarcasm. Deeply rooted to his hometown yet aware of the whereabouts of the world, Dev finds radical ways of living life for himself and for others.

“On The Swing” is a very sensitive script, rightly peppered with wise cracks and sarcasm and a fine dressing of regular Indian household drama, this is a dream-come-true play for any director. Every time we read the lines and enact the play, it evokes different hues of an emotion. Given the strong story and script, we are starting with two shows, but plan to have many more shows. We look forward to audience taking back something they find unique to their own lives.

Namrta Dhar

Story, Co-Director and Lead Female Actor

Having studied and performed theatre for the last couple of years, Namrta’s interest in “On The Swing” is largely owing to her personal belief in presenting meaningful art forms, especially theatre. She makes her directorial debut along with Amit Kulkarni for “On The Swing” and is excited about the experiments of the play. While the play is implicit when it comes to communicating a message, she believes that the audience will definitely gain from the story and expects different people to have unique take away-s.

While traversing through circumstances that finally define what life is and provide a flavor of everyday occurrence that they can relate to, the play touches upon various issues and ironies of life including individualism, priorities, loving and letting go, choices, yielding to societal pressures and so on, says Namrta.

Amit Kulkarni

Co-Director, Music Director

Best of both worlds doesn't come together as easily as it does in the personification of this serious amalgam of music and drama. An exponent of Hindustani classical with immense dexterity in Samvadini, and one of leading front-runners of dramatics and musicals at Natyankur Theatres, Amit draws parallels in both. His characterizations and treatments have been experimental in nature, and inspired by music.

Amit’s tendency to apply musical concepts of Aaroha and Avaroha to the flow of drama increases the eventual intensity and brings about a sense of completeness. The build-up of the flow and intensity in such experiments can be equated with the anticipation of an oncoming crescendo in an orchestral performance. Amit's approach is meant to touch audiences at two levels, one is via intellectual stimulation; and the other is a much deeper, subconscious introspective inquiry which is cathartic in essence like music.

Sudipta Banerjee

Story

Sudipta Banerjee has a passion for storytelling and ‘On The Swing’ developed as an idea which not only means a different attempt for a play but also a challenge to enact, during conversations with Namrta. They got together during their theatrical training days, to write an original script, drawing inspirations from true incidents around them, of their own lives, from friends, family and so on, and fine tuned it over a period of over a period of one year. Interspersed with imagination, these stories fell in place just like a sorted jigsaw puzzle and became a single story. There is, hence, nothing very new or out of the world, yet something very real and meaningful touching various aspects of life, ideologies and society subtly. When we narrated this story to our friends they were astounded even though it was just another story. We hope that when we enact it, we will be able to cause the same effect. The performance will surely be a bigger challenge and we keep our fingers crossed, says Sudipta.

Musten Jiruwala

Lead Actor

Musten Jiruwala made his theater debut in 2005 with Join The Dots group, primarily to contribute to meaningful theater that can make audiences think. Since then, he has acted in 6 plays and directed one. Musten often ruminates on out-of-the-box ideas for living and hence introspects deeply on various aspects of life. His idea of how wrong doings of the past can instill fear that can ruin the present was well captured in the play Spotlight. Or, how the epic Julius Caesar is relevant in today's time was presented in his directorial debut 'Et tu...'.

On The Swing has some very interesting views on society and relationships which inspired Musten to take up the challenge.

McAfee Positioned In The Leader's Quadrant In Analyst Firm's Magic Quadrant For Network Intrusion Prevention

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), today announced that leading research firm Gartner, Inc. has placed the company in the leaders quadrant in its “Magic Quadrant for Network Intrusion Prevention System Appliances,” as published on December 6, 2010.[1] This is 5th time in a row that McAfee has been acknowledged as a leader in Gartner’s Network Intrusion Prevention magic quadrant.

According to Gartner, vendors listed in the leader’s quadrant “demonstrate balanced progress and effort in all execution and vision categories. Their actions raise the competitive bar for all products in the market, and they can change the course of the industry. To remain leaders, vendors must demonstrate a track record of delivering successfully in enterprise IPS deployments and in winning competitive assessments. Leaders produce products that provide high signature quality and low latency, are innovating with or ahead of customer challenges (such as using endpoint intelligence to make more-efficient detections) and have a range of models. Leaders continually win selections and are consistently visible on enterprise shortlists. However, a leading vendor is not a default choice for every buyer, and clients should not assume that they must buy only from vendors in the Leaders quadrant.”

Factors contributing to a company’s ability to execute include products and services, overall viability, sales and marketing execution, and customer experience. Gartner evaluates a company’s completeness of vision by considering its market understanding, sales and marketing strategy, offering or product strategy, business model, and innovation.

“Customers and partners turn to the McAfee® Network IPS solutions because of our comprehensive, integrated and proven approach to network security,” said Rees Johnson, senior vice president and general manager for network security at McAfee. “Our position in the leader’s quadrant of this highly-regarded network IPS assessment confirms our relentless commitment to Network IPS and Network Security. Our approach offers both superior protection and decreased maintenance costs.”

Since pioneering the IPS industry with the world’s first purpose-built intrusion detection and prevention appliance, the McAfee® Network Security Platform has continued to raise the bar for next-generation IPS technology. Earlier this quarter, McAfee was recognized in the NSS Labs IPS comparative vendor study, and had the highest accuracy and throughput of any product tested to date. “We believe the NSS comparative study, combined with Gartner’s independent evaluation of our Network IPS solutions, demonstrates our undisputed leadership in Network IPS and Network Security,” said Johnson

According to Gartner, Inc.,[1] “IT debt is estimated to be $500 billion, with the potential to grow to $1 trillion by 2015.” This staggering figure demonstrates the need for CIOs to ensure they have complete visibility into the reality of their applications. The new Micro Focus Modernization Workbench Version 3.2 is designed to help IT departments easily perform sophisticated analytics to help determine enterprise application behavior and structure, giving CIOs full visibility into the value, cost and risk of the applications that are driving their business.

As enterprise applications have become increasingly complex, they have become more expensive to adapt to new business needs. Modernization Workbench 3.2 provides users with a richer, more flexible means to analyze these applications and deliver a clear, succinct picture of how individual pieces of software relate to one another. For example, IT architects will be able to see how a Java-based CRM application and a mainframe-based banking application are structured, giving them a clear picture of how these solutions interact and how to adapt these applications to new business priorities.

Modernization Workbench 3.2 also provides the ability for users to better filter application cost, value and risk data, enabling managers to make smarter decisions about where to focus scare resources. Additionally, based on customer demand, Modernization Workbench 3.2 now introduces flexible analysis that can be configured by users to understand even highly complex applications.

According to Gartner analyst Andy Kyte, “The issue is not just that maintenance keeps on getting deferred, it is that the lack of an application inventory and the absence of a structured review process for the application portfolio. This means the IT management team is simply never aware of the true scale of the problem. This problem, hidden from sight, is getting bigger every year and more difficult to deal with every year."

“Gartner’s recent IT Debt report showed that companies cannot keep pace with the rate of change in their organization, and unbeknownst to most enterprises, their large, complex applications are costing them an average of $200 million per year – mostly due to inefficiencies and inflexibility,” said Peter Mollins, head of application management and quality product marketing at Micro Focus. “With its ease of use and rich analytics, Modernization Workbench 3.2 is designed to efficiently help large organizations combat IT debt, and help them make better business decisions to decrease and eliminate that cost.”

Additional features of Modernization Workbench 3.2 include:

•Increased analytics within Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 via Micro Focus’ Analyzer Express module. With this enhancement, users can now gain insight into how COBOL applications are structured from within their IDE, shortening the development cycle.

•C# compatibility. In addition to COBOL, Java and PL/1, and other languages, the new version will be made available to C# users so they can create application portfolio management metrics and improve their visibility into application structure.

Prof. CNR Rao urges youngsters to focus more on Nanotechnology

Day two of the 3rd Bangalore Nano organized by The Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka under the guidance of Vision Group on Nanotechnology, featured a inspirational talk led by Prof. CNR Rao.

Mr. Ashok Kumar Manoli welcomed students from various schools and colleges and familiarized them with Dr. C.N.R.Rao’s ongoing efforts in the field of science and nanotechnology. He called nanotechnology as the 3rd tech revolution, after IT and BT.

Addressing the young generation, Dr C.N.R.Rao emphasized on the immense potential of nanotechnology to create, explore and build a better world. Since nanotechnology was a young subject, he felt it was appropriate for young minds to work on it. But he warned children to first build a strong foundation in basic sciences or engineering and later think of working in the field of nanotechnology.

The students were introduced to the world of nanotechnology through a short film titled “Nanoworld” produced by JNCASR (Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research).Tracing the history of nanomaterials to the Roman era, the film showed an image of the Lycurgus Cup. This cup is made of a special type of glass that changes colour when it is held upto light. The cup is opaque green, but when light is shone through it, it turns to a glowing translucent red. This unique property is due to small amounts of gold and silver present in the cup. Other interesting examples of nanotechnology in history included Micheal Faraday’s “divided metals” and Damascus Sword made in the eighth century that showed the presence of tin nanowires and nanotubes when studied under an electron microscope. The film next compared nano-objects with objects familiar to the children.

Next, Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Director, Amrita Center for Nanosciences addressed the budding scientists. He said that nanotechnology was a very exciting field and he hoped to communicate this excitement to the young scientists. “There are many brilliant examples of nanotechnology in nature and science must learn to apply the same in the lab”, he said. He gave the example of the lotus leaf that doesn’t absorb water in-spite of being surrounded by water all the time. He also demonstrated the structure of a butterfly’s wing that shows nano-scaffolding. Various applications in nanotechnology have been inspired by these examples in nature. He touched on the scope of nanotechnology in terms of regenerative medicine, tissue engineering , wound healing and various cancer detection and treatment procedures.

Dr. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Professor, Dept. of Organic Chemistry, IISc., in his lecture, compared “nano” to various examples in real life situations, like the thickness of a strand of hair, size of atoms, DNA etc. He also introduced the students to the concept of Quantum dots, properties of fluorescence shown by butterfly wings, why nanomaterials were stronger than steel and more flexible than nylon and the size dependent properties of particles. He recommended various books on nanotechnology and the website http://www.powerof10.com for the scientists of tomorrow.

Dr. Ajay Sood, Professor, IISc next addressed the gathering. “Graphene – The Great!!” was an apt title to catch the attention of the young minds. He spoke on the isolation of Graphene and its honeycomb structure. Since Graphene has energy in linear momentum, it has tremendous scope for new devices to be manufactured in various fields. He wondered if Graphene could replace Silicon in semi conductors and be the next wonder in the world of science.
