McAfee, Inc. Releases Report on Web2.0 Technology Adoption at Workplace

McAfee, Inc. world’s largest dedicated security company released a new report titled “Web 2.0: A Complex Balancing Act” in collaboration with Purdue University’s CERIAS research group. The report highlights the use, benefits and perceived risks of Web 2.0 technologies’ adoption at the Indian workplace and presents the corresponding security concerns that organizations face today. It also states that the most significant consequences from inappropriate social media usage are loss of reputation, brand, or client confidence.

Online Survey
The survey was conducted amongst more than 1,000 organizational decision-makers in 17 countries and shows high adoption of Web 2.0 in the enterprise. More than 75 percent of organizations reported using Web 2.0 solutions for many business functions. Web 2.0 adoption is lowest in the United States and the Commonwealth countries of the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. While adoption rates vary across countries, India along with Brazil and Spain, leads the adoption of Web 2.0 technology for business activities.

“Indian businesses are finding huge opportunities in the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, yet concerns about security and employee productivity hinder decisions to embrace it completely,” said Ambarish Deshpande, Director - Channel and Alliances & Mid-market, South Asia. “As Web 2.0 technologies gain popularity, organizations are faced with a choice of allowing them free access, blocking them, or embracing them while managing the tools in a secure way.”

Key Report Findings:

· Web 2.0 adoption rates are high, reaching 90 percent or above in Brazil, Spain and India. India is ranked second amongst seventeen counties polled in this report: Primary reason for adopting Web 2.0: to create new revenue streams, 78% of respondents from India attributed market drivers such as customers and partners as the primary reason for Web 2.0 adoption

· Indian firms ranked in the middle regarding use of social media policies despite ranking first amongst the countries that view Web 2.0 usage as threatening: 11% of organizations surveyed in India did not have a social media policy

· New revenue streams emerged as the highest driver of Web 2.0 adoption. Sixty-eight percent of organizations that use Web 2.0 report that expanded use of Web 2.0 technologies could create new revenue streams for their organizations.

· Security is the second leading concern for Web 2.0 technologies: One third of the respondents name security risks as their primary concern with Web 2.0 and the reason Web 2.0 technologies are not used more widely in business.

· Indian employers are more likely to trust their employees with Web 2.0 than countries such as UK, Australia , France and Spain

· Six out of 10 organizations have had at least one type of security incident and countries such as India, with the highest adoption rates were more likely to have multiple incidents and report larger losses: 5% of mid-sized organizations reported that they had suffered a data loss that had cost them more than $25,000. Of these 25% were from China, 14% from France and 11% from India

· Organizations in India and Brazil, which have seen high losses from security incidents, are most likely to budget for Web 2.0-specific security solutions: Three quarters of Indian organizations and more than half of Brazilian organizations do so

Executives and industry experts, who contributed to the research, agreed that successful organizational use of Web 2.0 is a complex balancing act. Enterprises must analyze business challenges and opportunities while mitigating the risks, and ensure that staff training and robust technologies are in place to avoid cyber attacks.

Tektronix Enhances ‘World’s Most Popular Oscilloscope’ Series, Starting at $990

Tektronix, Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of oscilloscopes, today introduced the TDS2000C Series oscilloscopes that provide more features and performance to go with a new entry-level model with a starting price of just $990. The “world’s most popular oscilloscope,” the TDS2000 Series is renowned for its industry-best performance with digital real-time sampling, important analysis functions and intuitive operation to help engineers and technicians get more done in less time.

With models ranging from 50 MHz to 200 MHz bandwidth, and with two or four channels, the Tektronix TDS2000C Series gives engineers the performance they need at an affordable price. A number of the existing models now offer increased performance including 2 models that were 60 MHz are now 70 MHz bandwidth and two models that offered 1 GS/s sampling rates are now at 2 GS/s. All models include easy connectivity with USB ports, an expanded set of 16 automated measurements, a new limit test feature, intuitive operation with built-in help menus, and the industry’s only lifetime warranty.

“Eight out of 10 engineers use Tektronix oscilloscopes and the TDS2000 Series is a big reason why our instruments remain the world standard,” said Mike Flaherty, general manager Bench Instruments, Tektronix. “With the TDS2000C Series we are carrying over all the features that have made these oscilloscopes so popular while enhancing functionality and offering lower priced models, giving our customers the industry’s best value at a breakthrough price point.”

Even with features found in more advanced oscilloscopes, the TDS2000C Series starts at just $990 for a 50 MHz model with 2 channels. This represents a 25 percent price reduction from the previous lowest priced model, and is lower than similar models from other brand-name suppliers. Every model in the TDS2000C Series features digital real-time sampling with at least 10X oversampling on every channel. Unlike other oscilloscopes on the market, the sample rate doesn’t reduce as additional channels are turned on, ensuring that each channel can accurately capture signals up to the oscilloscope’s full bandwidth.

New Functionality Boosts Productivity

With a compact and portable design, the TDS2000C Series delivers a strong feature set that makes it ideal for a range of uses including design and debug, education, manufacturing test, quality control, service and repair. A simple user interface includes innovative features such as the autoset menu, built-in help system, probe check wizard, and optimized instrument setup and operation. Special features include advanced triggering to quickly capture events coupled with advanced math capabilities and now 16 automated measurements for fast analysis.

New capabilities in the TDS2000C Series designed to boost productivity include datalogging and limit testing. After a user has configured trigger conditions, datalogging makes it possible for the oscilloscope to save all the triggered waveforms together with time stamp information to a USB flash drive within a user-defined duration (up to 8 hours). This is useful for applications that require engineers to monitor devices for long time periods for characterization and stress testing, while saving the measurement results for later analysis.

Ideal for manufacturing applications, the limit test function can be used to quickly identify problems and alert a production line operator when an input signal falls outside of a predefined mask. Without this function, operators would need to watch carefully and manually compare measurement data with printed criteria.

Pricing and Availability

All models of TDS2000C Series oscilloscopes are available now. Pricing starts at $990 U.S. MSRP including the Limited Tektronix Edition of National Instruments’ SignalExpress software and a lifetime warranty. The oscilloscopes are available through authorized distributors or directly from the Tektronix online store.

About Syd Barrett

Born in Cambridge in 1946, Roger Keith 'Syd' Barrett was the primary songwriter, guitarist and original lead vocalist of Pink Floyd. He formed Pink Floyd in the mid-1960s with drummer Nick Mason, bassist Roger Waters and keyboard-player Richard Wright. With their groundbreaking, semi-improvised sets at the legendary UFO Club in London's Tottenham Court Road, they became the prime movers of British psychedelia. Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd in April 1968. Over the last four decades, Syd Barrett has become the ultimate rock enigma. In 1975, he paid an eerie visit to his former band mates at Abbey Road while they were recording ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’, the centerpiece of the Wish You Were Here album he had inspired. He never entered a studio again. In 2001, he was the subject of a BBC Omnibus documentary. He died in July 2006 but his legacy lives on in the music of R.E.M., Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Blur and countless other groups. Earlier this year, Faber and Faber published Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head, an exhaustive biography by long-time fan Rob Chapman

MphasiS establishes Near Shore Development and Delivery Center at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia

MphasiS will tomorrow open its first ‘near shore’ integrated development and delivery center in Australia at the University of Wollongong. The strategic location of the center will enable MphasiS to work closely with the University of Wollongong on a range of initiatives including training, recruitment, and research and development in the ICT space.

Headquartered in India, MphasiS is an HP company which employs over 38,000 people and provides applications services, remote management services, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services to customers around the world.

Advt. Why Use CRM Software?

The MphasiS Near Shore Center, referring to its regional location and proximity to customers in Australian capital cities and in New Zealand, will provide local employment opportunities with plans to create at least 265 jobs over five years. The center will focus exclusively on customers in Australia and New Zealand and will offer a specialised resource pool for the telecommunications industry as well as a Center of Excellence for testing. MphasiS plans to offer specialised automated testing services from the test lab being set up in Wollongong.

Initially located on the main campus of the University of Wollongong, in 2011 the MphasiS Near Shore Center will relocate to the University’s research and commercial precinct, Innovation Campus (IC). MphasiS has secured 1288sqm of A Grade commercial space in the IC Enterprise 1 building, due for completion in mid-2011. The Innovation Campus will help facilitate a healthy work-life balance for MphasiS employees given its close proximity to public transport, the University of Wollongong, the Wollongong CBD and beachfront, as well as on-site facilities including a health club and cafe. MphasiS will join BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal as tenants of IC Enterprise 1.

Both MphasiS and the University of Wollongong wish to acknowledge the strong and positive support received from the NSW Government in ensuring the establishment of the Center in Wollongong.

“Australia and New Zealand are very important markets for us,” said Sudhir Mathur, MphasiS Regional Director, ANZ. “The MphasiS Near Shore Development and Delivery Center is a key investment that we are making to cater specifically to clients in this region. Furthermore, our partnership with University of Wollongong will work towards the development of local talent and create exciting employment opportunities in the region. AAMIR KHAN DONS THE ROLE OF A BARBER AND SHOPKEEPER IN THE LATEST TATA SKY COMMERCIALS

There are two new ad commercials from Tata Sky which follows the one that had great performances from Aamir Khan. While last time round, Khan donned the role of a milkman in Tata Sky's TVC, this time he will be seen in a role of a barber and shopkeeper.

Advt. Why Use Contact Management Software?

Conceptualized by Ogilvy & Mather, the core theme of the ad revolves around TruChoice Packages being offered by Tata Sky. Television viewers whether cable or DTH don’t have the true choice of selecting only those channels that they wish to watch. In the process, they end up paying for a host of channels they don’t watch or like.

For the first time in the DTH industry Tata Sky has introduced TruChoice Packages, which give the subscriber the option of only watching those channels he/she like to watch. Subscriber can get started on any of the Popular Packs (includes 2 FREE Regional Packs) beginning at just Rs 150 per month, after which he/she can add channels from a bouquet of Optional & Regional Packs (over & above 2 FREE Regional Packs).

Optional Packs comprise genres such as Hindi Movies, Music, English News, Kids etc, while Regional Packs comprise language channels such as Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati etc.

The concept is communicated through 2 television commercials one in which Aamir Khan plays a barber & in the other he plays a shopkeeper. In both the films the subscriber walks in asking for a particular haircut or white shirt, while he is forced to take something completely different. This is communicated through the use of humor & satire. The situation shown in the films draws a parallel between the DTH companies and barber & shopkeeper.

Like its earlier ads, these ads are also tongue-in-cheek with a very clear message and are definitely be something to look out for. Tata Sky as a brand stands for offering its subscribers Choice, Control, Convenience & enhanced TV viewing experience. The current film communicates the same proposition in the form of TruChoice Packages, which is another industry first by Tata Sky.

HP Achieves Breakthrough: Core of Its Six Internal Data Centers Now “Cisco Free”

HP today announced that all six of its internal next-generation data centers are now running company operations worldwide on HP Networking solutions.

In less than six months, HP IT engineers have replaced all of the non-HP core wide‑area-network (WAN) routers and switches connecting the six data centers to each other and the internet. They also installed 75 HP A-series routers and switches and upgraded and replaced 30 circuits – with no data center downtime.

“This past April we said we’d be Cisco-free for core WAN routing and switching in our data centers, and we are. We did it ahead of schedule and are seeing performance even better than we expected,” said Ken Gray, vice president, Infrastructure, Global Information Technology, HP. “Our engineers have done a great job proving it’s possible to run a network for a company the size and scale of HP on our own products, and we did the migration without taking a data center offline.”

HP’s data centers are located in Houston, Austin and Atlanta – two in each city. More than 85 worldwide internal data centers of 5,000 square feet or more, plus hundreds of smaller server locations, were consolidated into the six sites.

The HP IT teams also transformed the network architecture based on open standards. This open architecture helped facilitate the optimization of the network using HP Networking, including HP TippingPoint products, across the internal data center landscape.

Recently installed A-Series products include 20 A8812 routers, six A6616 routers, 18 A6604 routers, 16 A12508 switches and 12 modular A9505 switches. The equipment supports more than 260 Gbs of WAN data traffic, including 120 Gbs of internet capacity – four times the bandwidth of what was previously installed – and it runs high-volume operations such as HP Internet Services and online transactions through the company’s website, www.hp.com.

The next step in the migration plan is the installation of HP products on the fringes of the network connecting company facilities worldwide.

“When we talk to customers around the world, they’re looking for a full networking portfolio provider with open architecture enabling an alternative to the proprietary protocols they’ve been locked into for decades,” said Randy Mott, executive vice president and chief information officer, HP. “We knew from the first evaluations of the 3Com technology that it would be an exceptional value for HP and HP IT.”

The IT executives responsible for the design and implementation of the internal network will be holding breakout sessions for customers at the HP IT Forum in Atlanta, Nov. 18-19. Details on the event and registration information are available at www.hp.com/go/hpitforumATL.

More information about HP networking solutions is available at www.hp.com/go/networking.

ANGLO TECHNICAL SERVICES SWITCHES TO ANSYS SOFTWARE TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY IN THE MINING INDUSTRY

International mining enterprise Anglo American plc has selected engineering simulation software from ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS) for its in-house consulting and technology division, Anglo Technical Services. Based in South Africa, the division is responsible for specialized mining technologies that relate to innovation, operational efficiency, best practices, safety and sustainable development.

After an extensive evaluation of available products, Anglo Technical Services made a strategic decision to switch to ANSYS® software for all its finite element analysis needs. The suite from ANSYS enables customers to optimize designs throughout the product development process, especially in the early stages when changes can be efficiently and cost-effectively implemented.

Anglo Technical Services plans to leverage structural mechanics and explicit dynamics analysis tools from ANSYS to perform mining equipment failure scenario studies. Engineers will use numerical simulation to help identify the cause of the failure and develop new designs that will prevent future failures — all in a relatively short time, long before final design modifications can be suggested and implemented.

“It is clear that the ANSYS tools will dramatically improve our productivity. This is crucial in the mining industry, where every minute counts when equipment is down due to mechanical failure,” said De Wet Strydom, lead engineer, mechanical engineering at Anglo Technical Services. “We have found that ANSYS software has already reduced our modeling time significantly.”

A typical example is Anglo Technical Services’ mudrush control chute in an ore pass, which in the past took up to 40 hours to mesh and analyze. Using ANSYS products, the division reduced modeling and analysis time to just eight hours. The team now expects to perform higher-value simulation by including significant details in vibrating screens, for instance, researching deformation of a mill shaft, or identifying specific transient thermal and structural effects of an overheated bearing.

“By choosing a smart simulation solution from ANSYS, Anglo Technical Services is helping to ensure that its equipment and processes are designed and deployed successfully and most competitively. Equipment in the mining industry is both costly and energy intensive; every piece is a potential candidate for engineering simulation and optimization, including trippers and reclaimers, earth-moving equipment, conveyor supports and cranes. ANSYS software solutions are used throughout the industry to enhance product performance, reduce energy use and minimize waste, improvements that are vitally important in any sector,” said Stuart Hartle, regional manager at ANSYS.

ANSYS channel partner Qfinsoft coordinated the implementation at Anglo Technical Services.

Fortinet Extends Cloud Security with Four New Virtual Appliances

Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) - a leading network security provider and the worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced four new virtual appliances that extend the company’s ability to deliver security across virtualized and cloud environments. Fortinet has been securing virtual architectures since the introduction of Virtual Domain (VDOM) technology in 2004. Fortinet strengthened its virtualization capabilities in 2006 after it acquired the intellectual property and technology of CoSine Communications, one of the early leaders in the virtual appliance industry. The technology enables service providers to differentiate their on-demand platforms with a full range of value-add virtualized network security services. Large enterprises rely as well on Fortinet technology to protect the data within their private and hybrid clouds.

The FortiGate®, FortiManager™, FortiAnalyzer™ and FortiMail™ virtual appliances combine with physical appliances to provide customers with a choice of physical and virtual form factors, working together to mitigate security blind spots and increase security controls within virtualized infrastructure environments. The combined solution provides a deeper integration into the virtual environments many customers have adopted, enabling the company to expand the reach of its consolidated security further within the virtual movement.

The risks associated with blind spots in the virtual environment, along with the lack of security controls, become increasingly problematic as the size of virtual environments grow. By giving customers a choice of physical and virtual appliances, Fortinet is providing a 'single pane of glass' management platform that allows them the flexibility to use a combination of physical and virtual appliances together in order to achieve the right mix of performance, visibility, and control.

Fortinet Virtual Appliances

Fortinet’s virtual security appliances were built to run on top of VMware hypervisors and Fortinet is an Elite member of VMWare’s Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program. The new FortiGate virtual appliances help secure network infrastructures with integrated, multi-threat security. Like a traditional FortiGate appliance, a FortiGate virtual appliance protects infrastructure from a broad array of threats by enabling customers to consolidate their stand-alone security technologies, reducing the cost and complexity of their security infrastructure. Customers can combine firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, malware prevention, application security and complete content protection, data loss prevention, Web filtering, antispam, and have the added advantage of being able to inspect inter-zone traffic. In addition, FortiGate virtual appliances can be used in conjunction with traditional FortiGate appliances to help ensure both the perimeter and the virtual layers within a virtual environment are protected, visible and easy to manage.

FortiManager virtual appliances supply the tools needed to effectively manage any size Fortinet security infrastructure, from a few devices to thousands of appliances and endpoint security agents. The appliances provide centralized policy-based provisioning, configuration and update management for FortiGate, FortiWiFi and FortiMail appliances, as well as FortiClient endpoint agents.

FortiAnalyzer virtual appliances securely aggregate log data from Fortinet devices and other syslog-compatible devices. Using a comprehensive suite of easily-customized reports, users can filter and review records, including traffic, event, virus, attack, Web content and email data, mining the data to determine security stance and help assure regulatory compliance. FortiAnalyzer also provides advanced security management functions such as quarantined file archiving, event correlation, vulnerability assessments, traffic analysis and archiving of email, Web access, instant messaging and file transfer content.

FortiMail virtual messaging security appliances were designed to block inbound spam and malware before it can clog a network and affect users. They also help prevent outbound spam or malware (including 3G mobile traffic) from causing other antispam gateways to blacklist users.

The virtual appliances work similarly to their hardware counterparts, in that Fortinet continues to provide virtual Domain (VDOM) and Administrative Domain (ADOM) technologies for securing and managing virtual and multi-tenant environments. The virtualization technologies work in conjunction with industry-standard Virtual LANs (VLANs) to enable a single virtual or physical Fortinet device to support hundreds of domains within the environment, providing essential visibility and security controls between zones while maintaining the benefits of virtualization.

“While there are a few security companies dabbling with products that protect the network perimeter and the virtual layer, Fortinet is the only company to offer the full breadth of content and network security in an integrated appliance designed to protect both the network perimeter and virtual layers,” said Michael Xie, founder, CTO and vice president of engineering with Fortinet. “By providing deeper integration into the virtual environment, we are now positioned to expand our security market leadership and facilitate security within the ‘as-a-service’ movement.”

Logica enables Fennia to provide one of the most advanced document management services in Finland

Logica, a leading business and technology service company, announced today that it is working with a leading Finnish insurance company, Fennia Mutual Insurance Company, to provide them with a cloud-based content management service. The service will streamline, improve and increase the speed of document transfer between Fennia and insurance brokers.

Every year, a substantial amount of insurance policy documents, invoices and other related content are transferred between Fennia and insurance brokers. The new cloud based document management service will streamline and speed up this traffic. Logica has also integrated the service with Fennia’s existing on-premise systems.

“We have got a lot of positive feedback which confirms that this service is excellent for the document transfer between Fennia and insurance brokers”, explains Seppo Alinentalo, Director in charge of broker services at Fennia.

Free for brokers, the service currently covers 14 insurance brokerage firms and Fennia will soon offer it to all brokerage firms with which it does business.

“Our aim is to offer a comprehensive, paperless insurance service to our customers”, says Mr Alinentalo. He continues: “In the future, the service could also be used to exchange information and documents between companies for example on insurance payouts.”

“As one of the first cloud services to be rolled out in the Finnish insurance industry, it is groundbreaking in many respects and we are delighted to have been able to work with Fennia on this’, states Leena-Mari Lähteenmaa, Managing Director, Outsourcing Services, Logica in Finland. “The way our customers acquire services is changing. IT services are increasingly being leased or obtained on Software as a Service (SaaS) basis. A cloud service is not only cost-efficient, but it is also quickly deployed and scalable, which delivers business benefits, as Fennia is seeing”, she adds.
